I just finished my first novel ( Vengeance Is Sacred ) and I can only suggest that you pick your genre and topic . . then just start writing. The story will come to you as you begin to find the direction it takes you. Keep it simple, then add your subplots and find a way to connect them all together. If you have an area that perks your interest such as paranormal or science, keep on the alert for information, newspaper articles, newscasts, etc and try to incorporate the ideas into your story. Try to capture why it was interesting to you and carry that into your writing. Many times a story doesn't know where to begin, however, don't wait to find out . . . or you'll never start. You can correct everything, including the order of events, after it's all down on paper. Good luck to you.
