February book is Shadow of the Cross by Carolyn Garriott

Post Number:#1  Postby Scott » 18 Jan 2008, 19:33

The February book of the month is Shadow of the Cross by Carolyn Garriott.

I will start the discussion thread for the first fourth of the book on February 10th. I'll start the discussion for the entire book on February 17th.

Feel free to read at your own pace, but I suggest you take a break a forth of the way through to write down your thoughts.

If you do not have the book yet, please get it. You can borrow the book from a local library, buy it from a local book store, or order it from Amazon.

Thanks,
Scott

Just curious-

i was wondering if the people who voted for this book are actually going to participate =x
if you plan on participating, please just post here and say that you plan on it =)

(the reason i am doing this is to make sure that the member that voted on it are still here, the book was nominated by someone with a low post count)

I plan to read this one, providing the library can find it in time for me.

I plan on participating (even though I have had low posts in the past). The reason I seem so invisible is that about half the time when I try to log into the online book site, my computer (or the server, I am not sure which - MSN live search are you listening?) seems to direct me to their search engine and I cannot gain access. This has been frustrating to say the least. But rest assurred, I will participate.

This is driving me nuts...

The library can't/won't get it. Apparently it's not even on their system...

Waterstones and Borders tell me they haven't got anything by this author, although they have plenty with this title.

Amazon UK is trying to charge me 25 quid for a used one, but the seller has dodgy feedback points.

Amazon US has them for $20 (which sounds a whole lot better to me) but is out of stock, and I didn't even look at the nightmare that was probably shipping with that one. Sigh.

Can anyone tell me if this has actually been released in the UK? I'm beginning to think this is the problem. And I really wanted to read this one.

That's a tough problem, saracen77.

Does anyone know if there is an ebook copy of this book anywhere online?

Is anyone else having trouble finding this book? I haven't requested it from the my library yet.

Maybe for now on we could only choose books from the bestsellers list. Do you think those books would be easier for everyone to find?

I'm also having a tough time finding this book. None of my libraries have it, and amazon.com is out of stock (though maybe it'll soon be in stock?).

At least I'm not the only one going round in little circles!

Looks like I will have to join in next month. Sorry to bow out folks, but I'm definitely reading this one as soon as I can find it.

Do you all think it would be easier to find books from the bestsellers list? Do you want to limit future nominations to the bestsellers list? I imagine bookstores will keep those in stock. What do you think?

But wouldn't that limit the selections to recent publications? I wouldn't be in favour of that.

I think this month's selection will prove to be an exception, for what it's worth. In general, books are much easier to track down in one way or another.

I agree with that--I don't want to limit ourselves to new books, but maybe before the new book is chosen we could check the availability of the nominees and post any objections at that time. That way, any book can get nominated, but we can still try to choose a book that people will actually be able to get.
