Review : The Angel of Soriano by Stella Marie Alden

She is beautiful and has an impressive Dowry (an amount/asset given by a wife to her husband on their marriage). That is why she has to run for her life (literally!).

While The Angel of Soriano by Stella Marie Alden belongs to the historical romance genre, it has elements of mystery, suspense and humor. With a gripping plot, a fierce female protagonist and a forbidden love story, this book is a page turner!

Aurelia, the female lead, is a doctor. Her father practices as one, using her knowledge and expertise. On one of their professional visits, they encounter Borgia and Bernardo, who are both politically powerful. Captivated by Aurelia’s beauty, Borgia wants to make her his mistress. On realizing his intentions, Aurelia escapes and Bernardo follows her. In an attempt to save her from Borgia, Bernardo claims that she accidentally fell into a river. Aurelia’s father is now forced to practice (as a doctor) alone and soon kills a patient with his formula. In a fight that follows, Aurelia’s father is killed.

Bernardo escorts Aurelia to her uncle and promises to look after her. However, her uncle fears that she may have inherited some land. To prevent others from marrying her and gaining right to the land, he wants to kill her. On the other hand, Bernardo is engaged to Lucella (a character with shades of grey) as a result of a huge dowry and political influence.

With Aurelia facing threats from her uncle and Borgia, will Bernardo be able to fulfill his promise and keep her safe? Aurelia and Bernardo are attracted to each other, but with Lucella in the picture, will their relationship ever have a chance? What happens when Aurelia’s uncle attempts to kill her? What happens when Borgia realizes that Aurelia is alive? Will Aurelia and Bernardo fight for each other? Even if they do, with political influence involved, will their love survive?

The Angel of Soriano by Stella Marie Alden is an intense book. It has a complicated plot with many twists and turns. There were times when I had to stop reading the book for a while, just to be able to recollect and absorb it all. Having said that, there was never a moment when I was bored. There are elements of mystery and suspense in the book, and I always wanted to read ‘just a little bit more’, to be able to see what happens.

As a fan of the romance genre, I was happy with the romance element in the book. I liked how both the characters knew exactly what they wanted. They were both strong and loyal. Their relationship seemed realistic and their conversations seemed natural. Further, I liked how their relationship progressed over time. While there were many misunderstandings and disagreements, these were essential to the plot.

In terms of language, the book is easy to understand and follow. The story is told mainly from Aurelia and Bernardo’s perspectives, and this made me like both characters. I came across a few grammatical errors. While they were not major, they did interrupt my flow of reading. Overall, I thought that the language used was effective in conveying the characters’ feelings and in creating an atmosphere of suspense.

What I liked best about the book was Aurelia’s character. Despite the challenges she faced, she was not the typical ‘damsel in distress’. She had the courage and strength to fight for herself. Overall, she was an inspirational character. What I didn’t like about the book was its complicated plot. There were many characters and many sub-plots. There were times when I found it difficult to recollect characters and events.

I would rate the book 3 out of 4 stars. It has an interesting plot with many twists and turns. Further, it has a strong and inspirational female character. However, I found it difficult to keep track of all the characters and sub-plots in the book.

The book has a lot of mature content. I would recommend the book to adults who like to read historical romance with a little mystery and suspense.

Wow this sounds like a one dramatic plot... my kind of story! Also the fact that you said that the main character is inspirational, has me even more interested.

Great Review! ?

In some cultures, the dowry goes from the man to the woman. The plot looks very complex, with all those characters scheming to have an advantage over each other. It looks more lie the good, the ugly and the bad. I hope the good won it the end.
