Also have you ever read The Last Policeman trilogy? It's by Ben H. Winters. The narrator is a police officer in New Hampshire who's working under a very unusual deadline: there's an asteroid headed towards earth, and it's going to do to humanity what the last one did to the dinosaurs. The first book is six months away from the date of impact; the second one if about six weeks; and the final one takes us up to impact.
