October Book of the Month Nominations

Post Number:#1  Postby Scott » 20 Sep 2007, 14:01

Please use this thread to post nominations for the October Book of the Month. I'll start the vote on Monday.

Please try to think of books that the most amount of people will enjoy to read and discuss. (Avoid books that mostly only appeal to a minority.)

Thanks,
Scott

we should read the glass castle by jeanette walls or the measure of a man by sydney poitier. they are both memiors so that if some people don't like fiction they have the option of joining in the discussion.

John Irving anyone?
or how about A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle..It's a young adult book but it's a classic. I haven't read it in 20 plus years.

I would like to recommend SHADOW OF THE CROSS by Carolyn Garriott.
We read it for one of my other book clubs, and it was universally liked. It has 'something for everyone'. Animal lovers, historical buffs, romance (but not too graphic) and drama and easy to read. What more could a person want.

How about A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini? The author's fist novel "Kite Runner" was wonderful and this second novel is reputed to be even better. Here is an excerpt from a review on Amazon: "... bringning Hosseini's compassionate storytelling and his sense of personal and national tradgedy to a tale of two women that is weighted equally with despair and brave hope."

Has anyone read Mitch Albom's The Five People you meet in heaven? It seems to be a good one for discussion. I'm just finishing Family Tree (looked like a romance, but I didn't think it was at all) by Barbara Delinsky, I'd love to have a forum were I'd be able to discuss the ideas about racial identity brought up in this one.
