To me it really doesn't matter what I listen to when I read (or what I don't listen to...) When I read I don't even care about the language of the lyrics. but when I write I can only listen to music that fits what I want to write about. Most of the time I have something like "themesongs" for certain stories or protagonists. :)

Music is a strong medium that depicts your mood. I would always listen to music while writing but most of the times it will be purely instrumental or soft tunes.

I like to just have the radio on softly in the background-tuned to an easy-listening channel. I find it soothing.

absolutely, I can't write without music.... it used to be different music in different life stages.
and lately, I only found my way back to writing because of music - can't write without "Tokio Hotel" music these days

I can listen to the above but with no words or singing only the music if I am brain storming I prefer silence

I don't listen to music but I need to have the TV turned on. I glance once in a while.

When my mind is drifting away, I listen to music, I enjoy Mozart but when I feel bored, I listed to R&B.

Oh man, yes! If there is no music or background noise, I can't write. I usually have my iTunes turned on shuffle so I get a nice mix of classical, soundtracks, '80's rock[cause its awesome!], soft rock, and anything else I have on there.

If I have music going, it inspires different moods and different writing. Once I get into a certain mood, I pick other songs that have a similar beat and theme. Words don't bother me, I guess, because I picture something first and then describe it. :D

Sometimes I appreciate the silence, sometimes I enjoy a musical accompaniment.
Scott Hughes wrote:However, I don't have a problem if I listen to music without lyrics, such as classical music or instrumentals.
I agree, lyrics can be destracting. I am especially fond of classical when writing.
I think that if you enjoy listening to music while you write, simply choose something that isn't too distracting, and that means something to. Everyone has music that makes them feel relaxed, creative, imaginative.
