Deep in Holy Land Ground by Adi Zohar was one of the most interestingly put together books while still being a great read! The book is unique in that it is more interactive where certain places that are mentioned in the book have a link to a YouTube video showing that place. This enables the reader to be able to get an accurate picture of the setting in their mind.

The story is told from three different characters perspectives, each character telling the whole story of the same time frame from his or her point of view. The reader has a choice after each chapter to go to a different character and read from their point of view of the same story, or to read a whole character’s story first, then the next character, etc. The characters are very different from one another, including the monk Alex who lives and works at a Monastery until he gets called to the Vatican for important business to help stop a holy war from breaking out. Michal, a female archeologist from Israel, rises in the ranks quickly after finishing school due to getting the right connections and being pulled into top secret digging excursions, leading to an even more interesting ending that was very unexpected. Ahmed is a 17-year-old boy living in Haifa, and he realizes that he has a unique ability of being able to sleep for long periods of time, which results in interesting findings of what that entails after some research is done. This ability gives him a chance to do what he always dreamed to do after the right people find him, and his whole life changes out of nowhere.

This story is very well written and fast paced, keeping the reader entertained from the beginning. There is a lot of action, and even when there is a lot of talking there is a lot going on that keeps the story interesting and always bringing out the unexpected. The plot is always taking new turns, and each character’s story shows a different side to the same situation. The endings to Michal’s and Ahmed’s stories were very unexpected after reading the monks story all the way through, as they are on very opposite sides of view, showing just how things may look to two different people in different shoes.

Alex, the monk, is called to the Vatican but tricked by and lied to by the people on Michal’s side, manipulating Alex to get what they want, and Alex realizes this and is very frustrated but there is only so much he can do. Michal only lies to Alex for the people she works for, and does not like doing it very much but is able to do what she needs to do to protect their secret, which she does not even discover until about halfway through her story. In the end she progresses above even her husband, and has a choice that can impact the rest of her life and dramatically change it from what she always thought it would be. Ahmed is a boy who has had this unique ability and once he starts getting arrested for no good reason besides just having different religious views than the majority of group running the country, he gets researched. This research leads the top people to give him a huge opportunity that he has not even been able to imagine was ever possible.

This book was one of the most well written books I have read in awhile, as it was not too long and was just long enough to keep the story always in motion, never having a dull moment. Each part of the story contributed to the overall story, not adding much fluff, or useless scenes, as a lot of other books tend to do.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
