March is in my Mt TBR pile. It's on my "real life" book club list too. Anything that sits with Little Women gets my interest.

You can use this thread for now if you like. Sorry I can't kick it off "officially" for you.

I have read Geraldine Brooks' book March. I, too, was pleasantly surprised. I learned about what it was like to be on a war front in such a war, and a bit about what was going on politically in the background - about Ralph Waldo Emerson's writing during the war, about John Brown's effects - mostly about the Virginia war effort, and how very descriptive the book was on daily war.

This book also has some quite surprising romances going on!

Here was me before the book - "What can this chick from Australia (no offense, Sleepydumpling) know about the Civil war?"

This was me after - "She wrote with an impartialness about the North and the South that only someone not raised in the states could do"

No offense taken m'dear, but I am another "chick from Australia" who knows a LOT about the American Civil War. I've read every book, watched every documentary, and even been to some sites. I've always been fascinated by the American Civil War.

I know it was a silly point of view in retrospect. I've always been surprised by how Americans can cling to that war (and I am a southerner!).
She really did write refresheningly impartial. I never expected that impartialness - everyone here seems to have an opinion that can't help but express.

You know I think one of the reason American's are so suprised that we Aussies know so much about your history is because most of you know absolutely nothing about ours. I was shocked when I was in the US just how little people really knew about Australia.

Oh, I was surprised that Geraldine Brooks (or you) knew about the history. I was just wondering what she knew about the sentiment and the rift that lingers to this very day between north and south.

I might know a smidgen more about your history than most Americans because I am only half American (my mother being from New Zealand) but I am sure that I am vastly ignorant about it. I know what I know from her or from books.

Not at this point Charlotte. I am not sure where the mods for this section or site Admin have gone, as I can't start a poll or suggestion thread up in this section.

I seem to be all that is left of site moderation!

we could always just post a poll in a different section to get the ball rolling and then when the mods come back they could move it.

just a suggestion
