Bookaholc's quirks

Post by GotThatSwing »

Do you have some habits connected with books?

Me for example:
I always have a book with me in a bag.
I don't use bookmarks, just some pieces of paper I find around (old tickets, receipts, tissues)
I like reading book covers and I can spend hours doing it in a bookstore.
I like reading books in foreign language aloud.
I often read more than one book at the same time.
I have a mess in my room but not in my bookshelf.
In summer I sometimes read while walking.
I always read in train or in a bus but I can't read in a car.
When I start a new chapter I check how many pages it has.
I almost never re-read books.

What about you? :)

Howdy GotThatSwing,

I sometimes have a book in a bag.
I always use a bookmark, I have millions from ordering books.
I like reading book covers as well.
I can't read any other language.
I sometimes read more than one book at a time.
I used to have a mess in the house(not allowed anymore) but the bookshelves are immaculate.
Last time I read while walking, I walked into a parked car. :D
I cannot read on any moving vehicle.
I have only read an e-book twice.
I love to read on the beach.
I never, never, never fold a page over.
If I really like a book, or do not understand a book, I will re-read it.

Interesting ...

I always have a book with me (even when I don't have a bag!)
I always read on the bus, train, aeroplanes, boats ... not often in cars though, as I'm usually driving.
I use loads of different bookmarkers but my favourite is a paperclip
I never read in the bath
I read while cooking
Aside from family my books are easily my most prized posessions
I love handling really well produced books
I don't like getting gifts of books but I do love getting book vouchers
I go to extraordinary lengths to read the titles of books commuters are reading - (e-readers make it very difficult!)
I read every word in a book, including dedications, copyright detail, prologues, introductions, epilogues, bio notes etc etc
I regularly read aloud even if I'm alone

@Fran

Not good enough Fran, you must throw out all paperclips and don't fold the pages over either!

That is a big no no for me too. I don't overly care for my books, but I can't do that either.
Haha, that's funny about bumping into a car. I haven't yet bumped into anything :P

I also cannot read any other language...wish I could
I never ever "dog ear" pages
I use bookmarks..get them at the library..they're made for kids, but I don't care
I used to read two or even three books at a time but as I've gotten older I find I have a hard time concentrating on more than one
I like silence when I read
I have a few e books but don't care for them.
I have a collection of paperbacks in case I can't get to the library.
I think I'd have a panic attack if I didn't have a book nearby

I love bookmarks and love to pick up new and interesting ones all the time. Sometimes, I just use whatever.
On Kindle though, which I prefer, I don't need a bookmark.
I never fold a page over and cringe when my husband does.
I prefer quiet when reading but can read anywhere.
I sometimes "read" while I'm at work using my phone app  (people think I'm just looking at something on my phone)
I always have a book I'm listening to on CD and one I'm actually reading. Can't handle more than two at a time.
I never re-read books.
I rarely buy books - always try my two libraries first.
I'm not a super fast reader.
I will not watch a movie unless I've read the book first. Exception - I might go see the Anna Karenina movie.
I didn't read the Harry Potter series until last year - never thought I'd like it but Loved it!
I like to listen to books while cooking. Sometimes hard to concentrate on both though!
The beach late in the afternoon is my favorite place/time to read.
It always amazes me when I discover some of my close friends or family don't read! They are soooo missing out!
I get dreamily happy when going to a bookstore or the library. :D

I adore library book bindings because of the cheerful crinkly sound they make. Sometimes I just like to crackle the cover back and forth, back and forth, when reading a library book. Or will take a break from reading just to make the crackly sound. I have fond memories of certain books and the varying sounds their library book cover bindings made.

I don't watch tv, just read.

I don't watch movie versions of books I love.

I take my time with a book; the more I love it, the slower I go with it. I have taken to re-reading certain sections of a book during the initial reading of it to revisit and re-enter the world more thoroughly.

I do not like to be read to. No audio books. However, I love to read aloud to others.

No e-readers of any sort. Devoted to the printed word. Not even interested in any kind of e-reader. Can't imagine wanting to read a novel on a screen.

Reading with a pencil in hand is quite common for me.

Love bookmarks, but can't keep up with them well. Gather handfuls at library, but still can never find one when needed.

Never go anywhere without a book packed. Instilling that principle with my children as well.

I have exclusively worked with books, as a writer, or in educational setting all of my adult life. Bookseller, bookstore manager, librarian, library archivist, book reviewer, literary journal editor, free lance author, english professor, ESL tutor, and adult education instructor.

No job ever brought me the singular pleasure that working as a bookseller did. Placing the right book in the customer's hands or ordering or otherwise procuring a needed or loved book for another individual is one of life's greatest pleasure However, my legs and feet could not take working in retail any longer.

I vastly prefer to own books, but now as a stay at home mother of two young children, the library has become a wonderful friend.

I often spend a year or more just looking at a book I have bought that I wish to read. I prolong the pleasure just by fantasizing about how good the book is going to be.

Can read in moving car.

Have stolen beloved out of print books from library when a young adult.

Cried as a child because there was no bookstore in my town and I feared I would never own the books I loved.

Fran - lol, there's probably some co-dependency issues behind that prolonging of the pleasure! For example, I have been looking at a hardcover edition my husband bought me of "The Marriage Plot" by Jeffrey Eugenides since last Christmas. The entire premise is so up my alley - literary scholarship, literary theory, the history of the novel - that I can't bear the thought of reading it or not reading it! I'm still trying to examine why exactly this is!

Hmm let's see:

When I go somewhere (ie. to visit family or to the university), I usually bring a book.
I use a bookmark, which one depends on what kind of book it is (I have certain book marks for certain types of books), or which one has my preference, which one I just bought etc. I do have a lot of bookmarks, they're a nice little collection (most of them were free from the library when I was a child).
I read books in English or Dutch.
I'm quite a fast reader.
I don't like audio books, because of the way hearing works with my brain.

I try not to read more than one book at a time, because this gets confusing. I had to read several books at a time for school (ie. for Dutch, English and at home) and it was always confusing.
I try not to read too many series at once, for the same reason as above. Unfortunately this can't always be avoided as I have to wait for the whole series to be published etc (and I'm not always that patient :P). so I'm usually reading several series at once.
I can't read a series out of order either, it doesn't seem right.

I try to keep my book shelves not messy and put the books straight etc. But because I have quite a few books, it does look a bit messy as I kind of need more space, for it to be less messy.
I never read while walking, I can't do that.
I sometimes read in the train, I can't read in a bus and not too keen on reading in a car. I can get carsick. I used to read a lot in cars though until I developed my carsickness. I normally don't read in a plane, because it's awkward to get to your bag etc (I can't reach the compartment above people's heads easily and I try to always sit by the window).
I try to see what other commuters are reading.
I never read in a bath, nor while cooking. I can't do too many things at once. I do sometimes read when the computer is starting up.
I like silence when I read, however on the train I use my iPod so I can read while listening to music. It's really hard for me to read (or concentrate on anything) when it's noisy.
I prefer to read in my room, sitting in my chair in front of the computer.
I sometimes reread books, however most of the time I'm reading new books.

I don't read aloud.
I used to have a real problem with first person books when I was a child, thinking it was about me. Nowadays I can read them without trouble.
I never make folds in the pages of a book.

I love the smell of new books.
I'm pretty proud of my book collection, my books mean a lot to me.
I buy books pretty much all the time :P.
I usually buy more than one book at a time.
I prefer to own books rather than borrow.
I often buy a book, then look forward to it so much I don't read it until some time later on. The 'looking forward to reading it' can be a lot of fun!
