What's the difference between a smart man and a wise man?
About 40 years.
Don't I know it. This is a true story. Five years ago I quit drinking. I was taking my annual physical(my job requires
it). The doctor who examined me asked me the usual questions. Are you a smoker? Shortness of breath? Is your Daddy
rich and your Momma good looking? When he asked me if I drank, I said "A little. How much is a little? Six pack a day.
Your kidding!!! If your not in a treatment program, I can sign you into one right now. Good God, you're an alcoholic!!"
I laughed. I thought he was putting me on. He wasn't. He carried on this way for another 5 minutes. Finally, I said,
you know, Doctor, you're starting to annoy me. If you don't shut up, I'm going to quit just to shut you up. And I did.
So for me, 40 years is just about right. I started drinking when I was 15. 40 years later I quit. The irony is that I quit
for the same reason I started: Somebody told me I shouldn't. The moral of the story: Don't wait 40 years to be wise.

The same thing happened to me more or less but for a different reason. When I was a kid I quit school in my second year, I wanted to get a job and a car and girls and be a big shot.I got a job washing cars, then I got a really high class job shaking hides in a slaughterhouse. Thats got to be the worst job in the world. I got a 41 Plymouth convertible for 45 dollars, I pushed that thing more than I ever drove it, but I had a few girls so that was OK. I thought I was a really cool stud but as the years went by I realized to get anywhere you need an education. I never did, I piddled along most of my life thinking what do I need an education for? Im doing OK. But thinking back on it now, I wish I had made something of myself. Im fairly smart, I think I could have amounted to something. You young guys, stay in school go somewhere with your lives. Or you will end up shaking hides. Getting an education is both wise and smart.

^ Great post Bighuey. I left school after my Leaving Cert at 17 and wanted a job straight away, I didnt want to go to college at all, I just wanted money and a car and status and to travel. I ended up 4 years in a mind-numbingly boring factory job putting toy parts in boxes. The money was good but I just wasnt happy with my life, I needed education so I signed up for collee and got my degree in Chemstry and as a result of that I now have an extremely good job where my skills are used and Im training all the time, best thing I ever did.

What gave me the push was snide comments from my coworkers "Oh, you are here for life" "You will never make it to college" etc, I didnt want to end up wasting my life and being so bitter like them so I sorted myself out.

Thats a good one, I think I can be guilty of taking people who talk or confide in me as a sign that they need my advice instead of just listening with a patient ear..
