What are some super sad books?

Hi everyone, I'm in the mood for a super sad tear-jerker at the moment but I don't know what to choose. I recently read Remember Me by Lesley pearce and I also really liked A place for Kathy by Henry Denker. Do you have any more ideas? Thanks!

If you are into the old classics, one of the saddest books I have ever read is Captain Marryat's Ghost Ship. It is really a downer, it stayed with me for a long time. Other ones that are tear-jerkers, altho just short stories about child abuse, is Sabine Baring-Goulds Little Joe Gander and The Bold Venture.

When I hear " sad books" I always think of My Sisters Keeper by Jodi Picoult. I'm sure there are sadder ones out there....The Road by Cormac McCarthy The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood also come to mind. But My Sisters Keeper made me cry often while reading it.

I don't read misery lit, but I hear that's a booming market. Those I think are more about shock value though, such as A Child Called It. Please don't quote me on it though, because have not read from this genre so I may be completely wrong.

I try to keep my mind open to a diverse range of fiction, so I still read YA fiction because I'm still relatively a teenager (college freshmen). Coming of age fiction is always the most emotional kind of literature to me. I'd recommend The Catcher in the Rye (always makes me well up in parts), A Separate Peace, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and Looking for Alaska. The latter two people will say are over-rated or too mushy, but they're just being stiff ;)

If you're not too turned off by John Green (some people are), you might also read Paper Towns. Very beautiful little story.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for the suggestions! Alan, and Geneen Karstens Pretty much nailied the kind of fiction I like. I wouldn't read the ones about child abuse because they would be too sad for me, and I didn't want that kind of sad, but thank you for the suggestions! As for the misery lit genre, I didn't know that there was one, so I looked into it and that's not what I meant when I said sad books. I'm not interested in being shocked, I just want a book with a really moving story. Maybe I overemphasized the sad part of it. Thank you for the suggestions so far!

OK it's not a book but there is a short story by Oscar Wilde "The Nightengale & The Rose" which IMO is one of the saddest stories I have ever read. :( :(

I forgot to add you can read it for free online :)

Anything written about mistreatment makes tears well up in my eyes, like the classic BLACK BEAUTY by Anna Sewell.
Waaahh.....Strangely enough, sad books are not the ones I remember well. After reading a tearjerker, I have a good cry and move on.
