One of his greatest contributions is On Writing. Anyone trying to write any fiction (horror or otherwise) should be required to read this. It can save you a lot of trouble, and keep you motivated.

On writing was great. it was tinted with a bunch of humor, which was surprising to me having read some of his other books. It was ver to the point and had a lot of good information. I wouldnt really recommend salems lot to a first time stephen king reader. To me it seemed like the first half of the book just seemed to drag. Not one of his better books but still a great read.

Only problem with Stephen King, he is too wordy. Number of words might seem good to some, but I don't need one to one and a half to two pages to get the point someone is trying to make. Even a creative master such as he.

To everyone who has read "Hearts in Atlantis," I want your opinion (preferably without giving spoilers to those who have not read it yet).

Do you think the ending was happy or sad? I got mixed feedback from a few friends, so I want more opinions.

Thanks!

And then probably later I should see the other adaptation of The Shining that you mentioned. Sounds interesting.

I haven't read all the replies to your post, so this might have already been said, but...

You're right. SHAME ON YOU! A movie will almost never equal the book, and Steve is known for writing very long novels, which cannot possibly fit into a mere 2-hour movie.

I'm not knocking movies. I watch them regularly. Typically, even when I really like a movie, I will notice all the really good parts that didn't make the transition from the book.

Anyway, in response to your question. I really loved Pet Sematary.

My favorite (fiction) King was The Stand. Favorite nonfiction King was On Writing. Looking forward to his 2013 release of Dr. Sleep which will feature the little boy (Danny Torrence) from The Shining grown...and the psychological impact of that winter at the Overlook! Can't Wait!!!

If you are getting ready to begin reading King, you are embarking on a strange, fantastic, midblowing journey. Congratulations! Oh where to start....That is a very relevant question indeed. Pet Semetary is the first King book that I read at age 11. Probaby too young to start reading his matierial, but I was a rather unsupervised child and no one really noticed:) It spawned in me a love of the horror genre. Therefore my gut tells me that would be a good one. However, The Stand would also be a great place to start. It is the classic tale of good vs. evil with a good ole apocolypse thrown in.
If that doesn't tickle your fancy and you are looking for something newer, The Dome was fabulous! The bottom line is there is no realy order to read these books in. Each one is a masterpiece in itself and should hopefully have you enthralled and captivated by King's amazing story weaving.

I own the Shawshank Redemption (haven't read it-- or any other of his books for that matter), but I hear Shawshank is the best. It's just a novella though.
