Fifty Shades of Grey

Post by LiteraryAddicted »

Hi Everyone,

I am new to this but I have a question: what is Fifty Shades of Grey really about? I have heard so much about it and as a voracious reader I am tempted to read it. However, I want to know what I'm getting myself into. Anyone out there in the ether how has read it or is reading it that can enlighten me as to what it's about and why so much gossip?

thanks!

Im not sure what its about, but it appears to be loaded with sex. They were talking about it on a talk radio station today and I guess its a real scorcher.

Yeah, I heard something along the same lines. I don't like erotica, but I still want to be in the know as to what it's all about.

The thing about those erotic (or porno) books and movies, if youve seen one you've seen them all. There all the same thing, some of them with a little different twist, ceiling fans, ironing boards and kitchen utensels but basicly the same thing.

If you are interested, just read the book. You can always stop reading if you are dissatisfied. Otherwise, you are giving it inadvertant publicity. As Bighuey wisely says, read one porno erotica, you've read 'em all.

Yes,it is Erotica and I think you have to have a certain appreciation of these kind of reads.

I heard on the news tonight that some libraries are banning the books. I checked our libraries and see between the two of them there are 80 people on the waiting list. As for myself i'll pass. Just doesn't interest me.

I started reading it. What a waste of time. I only read a couple of chapters. I really don't understand what the hype is all about! With over 200 books in my Nook, waiting to be read, I can pass on this one!

Im sure the ones who ban them read them through 7 or 8 times, probably in the bathroom, with the door locked, to make sure if they should be banned.

You're probably right BH. The trouble with banning a book is that it just makes it more popular. It defeats their purpose and gives it a lot of publicity.

The author is admittedly "not a good writer". That being said, I read the first one purely because it kept my heart racing. The second one? I couldn't make it through more than a third of it. Unlike many people who dislike it for the BDSM content, I disliked it because I kept having flashbacks to the writing of Stephanie Meyer. Good thing about it? It's getting people to read.

I picked up a copy at Barnes and Noble the other day to "try it" like some of your suggested. Thank goodness I just read it in one of those chairs that they have there and didn't actually buy it. That writing is TERRIBLE!! And after about 20 pages, I still have no idea what it's about. I wish that people would just call it erotica and be done with it.

I concur with the above. Someone needs to tell her that a thesaurus comes free with Microsoft Word. The sex was pretty hot... but getting to the sex was tedious and repetitive. Even the sex itself became repetitive after awhile as she found the most unsexy ways to refer to certain parts and moments. Not to mention, she creates this completely trite and cliche model of a 'perfect man' that now every woman is aspiring for but no man will ever be - we get it... he's hot, he's obscenely rich, he flies a helicopter, he plays piano, enough already.

I've been wondering what this was about myself, thanks to all who explained it
