StephenKingman's thread of HORROR!

Post Number:#1  Postby StephenKingman » 05 Feb 2012, 09:21

I thought i would set up this single thread to chat about horror books i have read, will read, horror movies etc or any horror-related chat. Recently I have found im jumping from one thread to the other saying the same thing so it would nice to contain any horror related books here, that way discussions and recommendations can flourish, and I can vent about any issues to do with the above. Oh, and all are welcome here, its not a closed book!

Ill kick off by saying i have added two more horrors to my TBR list- The Woman in Black by Susan Hill and Hell House by Richard Matheson. Im seeing the movie of The Woman in Black next week and if the trailers are anything to go by it should be a treat. Hell House was one of those books i always meant to read but never got round to it so it will be an horrific February

Good idea Mike.

Are you going to read The Women In Black first or watch the movie first?

I read "Prey" by Graham Masterton a long time ago now and have pretty much forgotten the story, but i do remember what a great read it was and thought about it a long time after.
I would like to read it again and will have to badger the library to get a copy. Anyone else read it and what did you think of it or Graham Masterton compared with someone like the great Richard Laymon ?

I will be totally honest with you here SKM, It's been that long since I read it I've had to google it to remind myself what it was about. It's a haunted house story true enough, a man and his son go to the Isle of Wight to do up a house and strange and terrible things start to happen, the book has strange horrible creatures, a bit of time travel ( 11.22.63 ) and even a bit of romance thrown in. After reading the review I am now even more determined to get hold of a copy. :D

Hmm, after being a bit burnt by 77 Shadow Street I will approach it with caution, make sure if you read it to post a review and let us know what you think!

Know exactly what you mean but the fact that something stuck in my head about it must count as a good point. I will gladly review it here when i get hold of a copy.

Hell House was a good'n. I got/read it just based on what other people had said about it (on here, mostly), and I'm glad I did.
Lettuce know how you like The Woman in Black, p'eas. I may turnip in the theater for Valentine's Day, if I can get my sweetie to carrot me there. I've bean dying to see a new movie!
Hope that wasn't too corny for ya.
How perfectly goddamned delightful it all is, to be sure.

Thanks Tralala, i have read so much about Hell House over the years so its about time I read it, it will be interesting to see how it compares to one of my face books The Haunting Of Hill House, which was the standard in haunted house books in my opinion. I will indeed post a review of The Woman in black when i see it.

I garauntee you'll like Hell House. Its a dandy. Richard Matheson's Incredible Shrinking Man was good, too. They made an awesome movie from it in 1957.

Is that the one where he ends up in the basement, and it floods? The movie, I mean....I haven't read the book. Or was that a different Shrinking Man? I suspect there were several ripoffs.

One of the creepiest short stories I've ever read is Spurs, by Tod Robbins. It's not a "traditional" horror story, but it gives me nightmares.

Oh! And I'm borrowing a Bierce anthology with "Oil of Dog" in it...should have it by this weekend.

Youre in for a treat. Oil Of Dog is weird and sick. My kind of reading. Ive never read Spurs, but Ive got a copy of the movie they made from it called Freaks. Its from 1932 and is weird and strange. It was banned for years, MGM even took their lion logo off of it, they didnt want people to know it was one of theirs.

They made The Shrinking Woman in the 80's with the ringy-dingy telephone girl from Laugh-In, I forget her name but it was a comedy. In the original the basement floods and he fights a spider. It was a B+W movie. I dont know if they ever made a remake or not.

Has anyone read anything else by Sarah Waters? I've read The Little Stranger and I thought that was a great haunted house/ghost horror story and was wondering if there is another book by her like that?

If you liked Freaks, you should try to find The Unholy Three. Browning uses Hans (?)...I think that was his name in Freaks...the little person who marries Cleopatra...in that one. Lon Chaney, too. I've only seen the silent version of Unholy, but I really want to see the talkie, as an important part of the movie only works because it's a silent film.
Freaks is one of my favorites. That one spawned a lot of baaaad remakes, but most of 'em are worth seeing...She-Freak for the extras (only on the SWV release) with Daisy and Violet, and Hubert's Dime Museum! And Freakshow, for a beautiful dancing scene where the actors are suspended from hooks. Not as weird as it sounds. Or maybe my perspective's totally skewed...
Okay, that's the movie I saw! The original Shrinking Man, I mean. I think you're thinking of Lily Tomlin...?
