Short Story Contest Announced! Calling volunteer judges!

Post by Scott »

Update: Click here to see the official announcement, guidelines and rules for the new short story contest.

I want to have another short story contest.

I am looking for some members of the forum who would be interested in volunteering to judge the next short story contest. Using judges will be different than previous contests where the poll that decides the winner was open to anyone. But I worry doing it the old way could make cheating to easy. I will require that judges will have been registered before the time of this post. I will also require that judges have a post count of at least 25 at the time I am ready to start accepting submissions. If you are interesting in being a judge, please say so by replying to this topic or by sending me a PM. Please do not volunteer to be a judge if you think you may want to submit an entry into the contest. Judges cannot participate, and vice versa.

If can come up with a good theme, we can give the contest a theme. Does anyone have any suggestions for a theme? The stories submitted would be expected to be related to the theme. Having a theme might help encourage participants to write a new story for the contest as opposed to digging up some story they already wrote. The previous contest had a "spring" theme.

Any other suggestions or comments on the prospect of a new short story contest can also be posted here.

Update - Jan 20, 2012: I have officially announced the contest and posted the guidelines and rules here. I'm still taking volunteers for judging.

I have also adjusted the title of this topic to reflect the changes.

Hi Scott i would like to be a judge if at all possible? As for themes, maybe one on Winter or, as a horror fan myself, short blood curdling stories of horror as we approach the longer windy and eerie nights!

I am intrigued by the idea of a horror theme. I think we would need to agree on a standard of how explicit, gory, etc. the stories can be, i.e. is 'r-rated/NSFW' okay or are we looking for 'pg-13'?

And of course you can be a judge if you want.

I like the idea of a horror theme, or my other co-favourite subject.....comedy.
Scott, I wouldn't mind judging if you get short of options.

I would like a horror theme that is more sinister and psychological than outright gory and blood-filled; a creepy story that gets under your skin. Im happy to judge any theme, horror is a personal favorite is all.

So do you think it would be a good idea to ask the writers to keep it 'pg-13' so to speak?

Yeah, if horror was the theme, I think a lighter more psychological approach would be very effective, so a PG-13 limit would work well in my opinion.

Okay, I have officially announced the contest. I'm going with the horror theme. Find the guidelines and rules here. I'm still taking volunteers for judges.
