Writer's block?

I'm just curious as to how the writers here deal with writer's block. Personally, I think you simply have to fight your way through it. In order to get out of it, you must write your way out.

I am not a professional writer. But I do write scientific papers. A block is an indication that I am not ready to continue. How do I deal with it? I usually drop the topic. Desire to continue usually comes, sooner or later.

P.S. Actually it is not so simple. Sometimes I do fight the resistance. Reading what others have written, on the same topic is one approach.

Oh I never said it was simple. Anyone who has ever went through it know that this is certainly not the case. Good idea on using the works of others to help bring you around though. That sounds like something worth trying for sure.

Change your location! I'm fortunate that my full time job keeps me moving on the road and I find that the change of scenery helps get my juices flowing. For four of the five books I wrote (check out Devin Kerins on Amazon) I actually wrote from the locations I was mentioning in the books. While that is not always feasible, try to switch your location and see how it helps. Often I find it can change the whole tone of the story by getting a new perscpective.

That is why I try to walk for at least half an hour each day. Also standing and exec rising about 5 minutes each hour or so, while writing.

Yup! Me too.

I also freewrite for a while, if it gets really bad — just grab a pen and paper, or open up a new document, and type whatever happens to come into your head. Even if it's "I'm stuck I'm stuck I'm stuck I'm stuck". I go for maybe ten, fifteen minutes, and eventually something useful will come out of it!

Alternatively, I just power through, even if I feel flat and hate it and can't think. That's never fun, but sometimes necessary, and I'm usually surprised at how much I can write when I'm "blocked". You've always got to be careful it's not just an excuse!
