Has to be silence for me, i find any background noise, especially the distant sound of radios or loud televisions, quite annoying and i prefer peace and quiet for reading.

Has to be silence for me as well. I cannot read in a public place where there is alot of background noise. I don't know why, maybe my concentration level is very low, but I cannot concentrate unless it is nice and quiet. I also can't read on moving vehicles, such as trains, planes etc.
If you are not having fun......then what is the point.

Quiet? What's that? With kids, guitars, violin, keyboard, ipods, radio, CDs, tv, movies...quiet just doesn't happen in my house. And now Xander (gerbil) has taken to chirping constantly while he's awake. It sounds like there's a bird in my living room. At first I thought he was hurt or something, but he's fine. I think he just wants more attention.
How perfectly goddamned delightful it all is, to be sure.

LOL - I totally agree. I live in a four bedroom house with five brothers and sisters, three rabbits, and two adults. It is never quiet, but I have found that the best time to read is either first thing in the morning - usually about six AM for me - or last thing at night - around 9pm.

I prefer quiet (have ADD and need to concentrate...), but can take "white noise".

It should be quiet here now (just past 1am), but three of the rodents are nocturnal, and playful. Are rabbits nocturnal?

I think that they are semi-nocturnal - our run around during the day, but also some of the night. Have you a favourite time to write/read?

Hmmm...I've been thinking about getting a rabbit or few. Not any time soon, though. Five pets is enough for now! Well, actually, my daughter just informed me that she bought a hamster, so it's probably just a matter of time before he ends up here, too.
I read while I eat, and I usually end up writing while I'm in bed. I keep a book on my desk, too, and I'll read while waiting for a file to come in...if my lesson plans are done, anyway. I figure I'll have time for all that after both kids are through college and I finish my degree...and after I sleep for a few months. :)

The 'ssssh' made me smile because when I was young the librarians used to enforce silence in their libraries with a 'shushing' finger to the lips - but not any more. It is a stereotype gone the way of video tape. A reasonable level of sound is accepted, mainly consisting of voice noise, but generally patrons read, study or use the computers in relaxed silence. Oh, and if I'm reading a really good book I like a quiet atmosphere.

I can read with anything going on as long as the book is good. I will get sucked in and the world around me evaporates. My kid has ADHD and if it is not completely quiet with no distractions he will be paying more attention to what is going on around him than what is going on in the book.

I have ADD, which is nearly the same thing, and I am like that - in the evenings I need complete quiet to read or write.

It depends greatly on my mood. There's nothing better than coming home to a glass of wine, quiet house and a nice book. Then there are times that I want background noise because it keeps me from being distracted. That way I don't hear every, little noise in the neighborhood.
