What makes me poetic is music, and the things I experience everyday.

Anyone can make a rhyme, but true poetry comes straight from the heart

All my poems come from sad emotions - they usually end up being quite depressing. Hopefully a strong surge of joy will come along and make me poetic sometime instead. :)

You are right! Most of them are sad but there are also happy and full of hopes poem or poems that express too much love.

I was interested to see that everyone went for the "deep emotion" answer. I think it's too easy to say that, so I just quickly conjured a poem to explain:

Surely, friends, it's not only love,
or sadness, despair (or worse,)
which tempts us to hold the pen enough
to scribble down some verse?

I would hope, that in the bounds of life,
people just do things for love.
Not that cheesy, awful emtional strife,
but for interests sake enough.

I despise those dullards who reply with glee,
that "deep emotion" is their muse for verse.
It's for interests sake and word play for me,
for "deep emotion" is a pestilent curse.

That is why I write poetry.

For me,
poetry flows from the soul,
but the mind cannot be detached
The yearnings,
desires,
and feelings of love,
are passions that long to be hatched

Inscribing my feelings
in linguistic form
bestow them with manifestation
Like lightening flashing
in a blistering storm
they convey my despair and elation

Poetry melds my spirit with Earth
in a marriage of feelings and prose
Like planting a seed and watching it grow
to become an unfurling rose
