+1 for DAToAA1495 wrote:Sound of any kind when I'm trying to read or write really distracts me. Sometimes, I like instrumental music. Generally, I like silence when I'm trying to read.
Honestly I don't know how people can concentrate on homework or reading with music in the background. I suppose my brain just isn't wired that way. The work I do professionally requires intense concentration most of the time and I suppose that over the years my brain just got acclimated to focus in such a way that it needs to block out any distractions, so if distractions are present I cannot function with all my skills because my mind is trying to both process the job at hand as well as block out the information coming in through my ears.
I admire people who can multitask this way, but I just can't do it.

I remember in middle school one of my classmates complained to the teacher that she couldn't read in class because it was too loud. I told her she would have to get over it because the world is full of distractions. Some great wisdom from a sixth grader.

Depends on whether I'm reading for pleasure or work. If it is work-related, I read in silence. If pleasure reading, it is always classical. Usually piano concertos. Sometimes the flow of the music ends up matching the book's narrative pace, and that is wonderful.
