Honestly I don't know how people can concentrate on homework or reading with music in the background. I suppose my brain just isn't wired that way. The work I do professionally requires intense concentration most of the time and I suppose that over the years my brain just got acclimated to focus in such a way that it needs to block out any distractions, so if distractions are present I cannot function with all my skills because my mind is trying to both process the job at hand as well as block out the information coming in through my ears.

I admire people who can multitask this way, but I just can't do it.

If I listen to music at all, it will be classical. But I can get distracted pretty easily if the music gets intense.

I like to listen to anything I am familiar with. This is generally Alt-J. I don't normally listen to music when I'm reading, if I do I'm trying to block out something else that is distracting.

I remember in middle school one of my classmates complained to the teacher that she couldn't read in class because it was too loud. I told her she would have to get over it because the world is full of distractions. Some great wisdom from a sixth grader.

I enjoy listening to instrumental music while reading. It soothes my mind and helps me relax. I find other types of music distracting.

Most times, I need to listen to either smooth jazz or anything symphonic or classic. In most scenarios, I actually have to listen to a soundtrack that matches either the character or the certain scene, if I can find one!

I will occasionally listen to music when reading but only instrumental. I mainly just like it quiet.

I am fond of classical music, and loves to listen to classical instrumental music while reading, usually Baroque music or any Mozart. Both of these helps to focus the mind. I will keep other distractions to a minimum, for example no TV while I'm reading.

Depends on whether I'm reading for pleasure or work. If it is work-related, I read in silence. If pleasure reading, it is always classical. Usually piano concertos. Sometimes the flow of the music ends up matching the book's narrative pace, and that is wonderful.

I am one of those that cannot listen to music while reading. I have tried, but it really distracts me too much. Especially if I'm really into the story. Then I'd definitely rather be able to just concentrate on the book.

I like listening to chill beats on SoundCloud. It makes reading feel like a detoxing experience as well, and I always feel so relaxed after a reading session.

I usually don't have music on when I read if I am at home. If I'm reading in a public area, it doesn't bother me if there's music on. Instrumentals are least distracting because I tend to bob my head or take a break to lip sync if a good song comes on.
