Little Tree (Original Lyrics)

Post by phonicphoenix »

Little tree
Who will you be?
Will you grow as tall as me?
Or will you grow to brush the sun?
Or will you weep when the day is done?

Will you caress,
The wind like a friend?
Or will you lose hope,
When Winter comes again...

It doesn't even matter,
I will love you anyways.
Grow till' tall
And we'll see
Who you are
Someday

I liked this, phonicphoenix. What inspired it? The words alone have a good rhythm to them. Obviously you worked hard to make them concise and effective. I salute you for your efforts. I'm a music lover, myself, though when I write music, it's usually without words... I'm honing my skills at writing songs, though. Is there a place where I can hear some of your work, or are you just starting out?

Thank you so much for the compliment! This song was actually featured on a local benefit CD and can be found on YouTube by searching "silvermountaincreek little tree". I was really inspired by comparing my youth to that of my cousins and realizing that the same things my mother always wondered about me I in turn felt for my cousin. Growing up in West Virginia you learn to be very close with nature and with your family and it was natural for me to combine the two. As for other material, I'm working on a concept album but I've been really patient and have worked on it over several years.

Awesome! I get to hear it! :D I'll look it up and tell you what I think. I'm glad you're being patient with your next album. I think too many artist, after their first albums, start trying harder to be prolific than creative, and their music definitely suffers as a result. I'm hoping to do something neat with my own music one of these days, something like submitting it to Carnegie Hall... :D It's a dream, anyway. I'd love to see more of your lyrics if you'd like to share. Music and poetry are a part of me, I guess. I can never get enough. If I can locate any other songs of yours, let me know where to go.

I like that you have thoughts of what you think the tree might grow up to be and yet accept the reality of time in waiting to see what the tree is actually already, but just growing into. I immediately go to transferring that to people and how we view others and ourselves. We are who we were created to be, the potential is there for different sizes and shapes (ideas, character traits...) but to expect that tree to be a weeping willow when its an oak, pretty impossible expectations because it will grow into a taller version of who it is today, freedom of expectations but expectant waiting :)

Thank you for that! That was my original concept going into the writing of this song and to have it summed up and realized is absolutely amazing. :-)

I know that feeling, my husband does that with thoughts and experiences I have...encapsulates them well into a few short sentences and I'm left like whaaaaaat? Haha, it took me months to condense my idea into this very conversation and he gets it even smaller. I'm glad I got your original meaning...freedom to take what an artist says and move it into yourself is neat but to get what they wanted to give, even better. It fits my life right now...tough, but some pretty good thoughts there for me.

For some reason, this poem really reminded me of a book I read when I was little called Flipped about a girl and her love of the neighborhood tree.
