This is the place for readers of poetry. Discuss poetry and literary art. You can also discuss music here, including lyrics. Also, you can discuss poets themselves, in addition to poetry.

Not sure if all of these qualify as country songs, but these are the songs i generally find the saddest to me either by some sort of imagery i relate the songs to or by the lyrics themselves:
- If I Die Young by The Band Perry
- How Can You Mend A Broken Heart? by The BeeGees
- I Started A Joke by The BeeGees
- The Baby by Blake Shelton
- Life Will Go On by Chris Isaak
- Not Ready To Make Nice by The Dixie Chicks
- Tears In Heaven by Eric Clapton
- There You'll Be - Faith Hill
- (Not really country) Say Something by A Great Big World Featuring Christina Aguilera
- Daddy's Hands by Holly Dunn
- Hurt by Johnny Cash
- Spiritual by Johnny Cash
- You'll Think Of Me by Keith Urban
- Why Me? by Kris Kristofferson
- I Hope You Dance by Lee Ann Womack
- The Boxer by Mumford & Sons
- Heart Of Gold by Neil Young
- Things I Wish I'd Said by Rodney Crowell
- The Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkle
- Runaway Train by Soul Asylum
- (Again not country but definitely makes me cry every time) Something To Remind You by Staind
- Gotta Let Go by Tom Bertling
- If Tomorrow Never Comes by Garth Brooks
- When I Call Your Name by Vince Gill
- Always On My Mind by Willie Nelson
- What's Up? by 4 Non Blondes

I'm sure you can tell that i don't really categorize my song list according to genre.

I still think the song that epitomizes sad country song is George Jones..."He Stopped Loving Her Today", in the new breed of country Darius Rucker's "Don't Think I Don't Think About It" is a gem...could cry in your beer all night with just those two songs...add "You Were Always on my Mind" and you'll be ready to give it up...

One song I'm crazy about is Carrie Underwood's Blown Away. I couldn't believe how powerful it was when I heard it the first time. Some of the new country is extremely passionate. Blown Away is one of those songs that has that 'legendary' quality about it, something that touches the soul and takes it to a place where most of us have only been in daydreams, the one wherein all things intellectual are but shadows, and the heart is dictator.
Those who dream by day are cognizant of many things that escape those who only dream at night.

I think the song "Hey Pretty Girl" by Lee Brice & "White Horse" by Taylor Swift are pretty sad.

I'd have to go for Crazy by Patsy Cline too. Such a wonderfully depressing song, and yet I can't get enough of it. She's Got You is pretty sad too :)
