This is the place for readers of poetry. Discuss poetry and literary art. You can also discuss music here, including lyrics. Also, you can discuss poets themselves, in addition to poetry.

I'll bet it has been mentioned before, but " Jolene "

My sister said it reminded her of my Mum. When I got older I realised what that actually meant. Now its even sadder. :(

Wow, Fran. Thats a good one. One more I thought was sad was that one by Jim Reeves, dont remember the name, but its about the guy who comes back from the Army and his dog meets him but he finds out later the dog has died while he was gone. It seems the dog led him through a flood or snow storm or something.

Just about anything by Martina McBride is pretty darn sad.

Prior to 1920 in country music,
The wreck of the C & O train occurs in 1890 near Hinton, West Virginia, the basis for "Engine 143" recorded by the Carter Family.

The word "Hillbillie" printed for the first time in New York Journal on April 23, 1900.
The wreck of train 97 occurs in 1903 near Danville, Virginia, the basis for "Wreck of the Old 97" recorded by Vernon Dalhart and others.
"Rube" comedy, long country dialect tales like "Uncle Josh" become popular in 1909.

Nobodys Child. A traditional song that goes way back. Hank Snow did a version in the late 50's or early 60's, and The Beatles did a version in 1960. It was one of their first recordings. Its about a blind boy in an orphans home.

I've just been listening to Carmel Conway performing He Was Beautiful (Stanley Myers - Cavatina)
Not sure if it counts as country but it breaks my heart everytime I hear it ... one of my all time favourite movies The Deer Hunter.
