Really sorry to hear that, laci. Your mother obviously has issues. One thing you can take from this is not to treat your children the same way when they grow up. Hang in there.

(((hugs))) I was raised by one of "these"...completely understand.

Don't let her undermine your happiness...your relationship with your husband...or the happiness of your child. You can be the mother you always wish you had. Don't let her rain on your happiness. That is what an answering machine (and sometimes just the hang-up button) is for :)

This is so very true... and I've had this same issue with people in my family. Not just my mom, but one or two of my sisters too. My step-daughter has similar problems with her mom. What I always tell her is that just because they are your family doesn't mean you have to put up with BS from them. You may always love them, but by no means do you have to like them. If you wouldn't associate with that kind of person that you met at work, a book club, or wherever, then you don't have to associate with them just because you're related to them. It is their loss, not yours. It's a hard decision to make, I know, but often times you will find yourself much happier without the constant problems in that relationship. And, of course, it doesn't have to be permanent. They may come to their senses one day and realize what a great person/relationship they missed out on.

My rant is similar. Every one here has half a dozen dogs, and when one starts barking, every dog in town joins in. That with the well they are drilling across the road makes for quite a serenade. Clankthump woof woof clankthump woof woof and so on. Im not bothered with cats, though. The dogs eat them.

Okay....I'll join in here...what is it about people owning "shrieking rats"??? Those tiny yappy dogs. And every time a leaf moves outside they JUST KNOW it is someone...come to kill the entire family. For one brief moment I considered a long-haired daschund puppy early in my move. A glare from Tucker "...oh hell no..." and listening to the frantic symphony that surrounds me (in other apartments) when ANYTHING moves...or breathes...or thinks about breathing...cured me of that silly notion! Cats Rule.

@Carla Hurst-Chandler and Bighuey...
I shouldn't hate the cat, I should hate the owners. Get your damn cat fixed! Or keep it inside...no, screw that. Get it fixed. There's a vet not two blocks from my house; they'd be happy to do it, I'm sure.
My daughter has one of those yappy dogs (and PLEASE don't compare them to sweet, cute luvvie rats! :D ). It doesn't bark very often (thank goodness) but when he gets going, it's tough to get him to stop. And that cat ALWAYS gets him going. One of these days I'm gonna launch him from my deck to my neighbor's deck and let 'em fight it out. But I just remind him of our agreement: "You don't bark, and I don't squish you".
How perfectly goddamned delightful it all is, to be sure.

@Laci. I know what you mean. They run into someone they know and stand with their carts and kids and visit. It is very rude.

I know that feeling. In Mexico the stores have narrow aisles, and they are usually filled with boxes and stuff and people leave their carts in the aisles to BS or have a phone stuck in their ear and you usually have to detour around everything. Kill.
