It has been very hot here .... 100+. The state, as it does each year, is on fire. The smoke is everywhere and the smell along with the yellow sky left me inside. But this morning, I find the sky to be blue though the fire continues. The wind is blowing to the south; so I get a reprieve. I'm going to play outside until the winds change toward the east.

I woke up and stumbled to the kitchen to get the coffee brewing and directly in front of the place where the coffeemaker sits on my counter is a large window which looks out over the back of my property which is naturally wooded. It was a little before dawn - that misty, magical time of the day when the world is also waking from its slumbers. In the distance, not more than 50 feet from the window was a small dip on the side of a hill facing away from my view. Above the line of the dip I saw something moving. It was ears twitching back and forth just over the crest of the hill. As I watched a tiny faun stood up on tottering legs. Its lightly tanned coloration was dappled with white dots along its back and its enormous grey ears which had protruded over the top of the hill were now fully erect and focused on distant sounds. And then, unbelievably, another pair of ears poked up from the depression and soon another faun of the same age and description was also standing beside his brother. Their mother was nowhere in sight though I was certain she was near. I was so tempted to go out on my deck to view them from a closer perspective but was afraid I would frighten them so I stayed inside and continued to watch them for awhile.

Their mother was probably the culprit who had been eating my hosta plants. I recall how angry I was when I saw the mangled leaves, but she has paid for her dinner by sharing the beauty her foals with me. She honored me by placing the foals to rest within five feet of the hosta patch on my property for me to see as if to say "Thank you."

Where I used to live in Utah the deer would eat everything out of a garden. We had an apircot tree in our front yard that hung out over the road, when the apircots got ripe they would fall to the road. In the morning there was nothing left but a bunch of apircot pits all over the road.

I had a book that told how to keep animals out of your garden, there were different methods from scarecrows to vinegar. For deer there was only one sentence. Build an 8 foot fence.
"I planted some birdseed. A bird came up. Now I dont know what to feed it." Ramblings of a retired senile mind.

A great post - You lost the beauty of your flowers, but gained the beauty of new life - a good trade.

That sure is one beautiful moment of nature DATo. :)

The sky was covered with clouds all day but now the sky is blue and the sun was shining before the sunset. :)

California continues to burn, but at least the wind has changed direction. I have clean air to breath. The days have been hot (100 +) and it is hard to do my chores ... so I don't. I just do what must be done, and then I spend the rest of my time with the AC and a book titled Stan.

Braking and entering:
A fly got tangled in a spider's web. I watched as the spider stung the fly and wrapped it in a silken cocoon. Then, a strange thing happened. A wasp flew by and noticed the spider's dinner. It lit onto the cocoon and started pulling to free it from the web. During its efforts, it managed to get tangled in the web. There ensued a great struggle which did great harm to the web. The spider made no attempt to intercede as the spider's size was no match for that of the wasp's. Eventually, the wasp manged to free itself and with its prize, flew off. The spider was left with no dinner and much repair to its home.
