The Aeneid by Virgil Translated by Robert Fagles

Post by Athene Noctua »

This epic story tells the other side of the Trojan War and tells the reader of the Trojans quest for a new home. Originally written by Virgil, it was never meant to be published. In fact, he wanted it burned after his death. It may not be complete as there are some lines where he ends suddenly. However, he masterfully weaves the tale of Aeneas. This epic poem is a classic.
This translation of the Aeneid is well done. It maintains the flow and rhythm of the original poem, yet also translates in a way that reflects the meanings of the words. I took Latin for five years and had to translate much of the original poem which was originally written by Virgil in Latin. I would recommend this book highly to both students studying Latin and to those who want to read the epic poem.

Should really read the full translation. Did tiny portions of it for Latin GCSE as a teenager and found it heavy going.
