Great review! Although the story sounds interesting, I don't think it's my cup of tea - I prefer historical fiction about relatively more recent time periods (Civil War era and forward). Still, I commend the author for what appears to be a very well-researched book.

I love historical fiction and from your description, this sounds exactly my cup of tea. I don't even mind lengthy discussions. Guess it's the history major in me. Thanks for the great review!

This book sounds compelling. I think that I would enjoy it as I love both historical fiction books and ones about Jerusalem. Thanks for the review.

it can’t be helped if multiple sieges and battles require the same dialogue and sequence of actions,
This is an interesting observation. As an ex-military type, I found after-action briefings to have this same quality noted by the reviewer. It truly dulls the senses and important decisions can result from inattention to seemingly irrelevant details.
Don’t forget that this book is also part of a trilogy! Without the other two books, you won’t get Balian’s full story.
A nice warning. I found this sample so interesting I would like to read the entire trilogy. I just don't know how to integrate it into my workday.

Thanks for the review. I was one of those that doesn't like world history so I am not familiar with all of the going on in the book. I am glad to hear about the genealogical charts and stuff included because it sounds like it will be very helpful to any reader.

I find historical novels a challenge in the best of times and a trilogy is probably more than I can handle. However, I do like the time period and the idea of wrapping real characters in actual historical events a great way on getting through a period where I probably fell asleep in my history class. Combine that with the troubles in the world today and there is some real value in the series. And, it is well written! Thanks for the review.

Sounds like a great book! The not being able to keep track of characters and events reminds me of my experience reading Game of Thrones. So many characters and battles to keep track of there too! I might have to check it out.

Thanks for the great review!

I like that this book includes charts, maps, and a list of characters so the reader has an easier time keeping up with the story. You said that this is Book 2 of the Trilogy. I haven't read the 1st book, so it's great that a brief explanation of book 1 and the time period are also included! Really good review...thank you so much!

Thanks for the great review. The story had proceeded without any theological distractions as what Jerusalem is commonly perceived as a holy city. Congratulations to the author for BOTD.

Excellent review, thank you! This gives a much better idea of what to expect from the book than the blurb on Amazon, and no plot spoilers. Well done, and thanks again.
