'New' Children's Classics

Post by librarydancer »

Let's get this forum going!

I am a mom of 3, and a new children's classic is
' The Day the Crayons Quit',

an adorable story about crayons who revolt and how the child accomodates them.

This book is probably appropriate for ages 4-7, and reminds kids that it's ok to be creative!

Hi!
I recently read "The Day the Crayons Quit." That is an awesome book for children. I love the color's description of how much they are used. My daughter wants to be an early childhood/elementary school teacher, I just might buy that book to add to her collection, because I think the book could be enjoyed for many years to come.

Personally I will always and forever read as a children story "Love you Forever" by Robert Munsch published in 1986. To me, that will always bring out such wonderful memories as well as encouraging a relationship with parents after being an adult. Touching and compassionate it makes my heart warm.

The Day the Crayons Quit is a wonderful children's book. As a children's librarian I definitely think it should become a 'new' classic. I used it for an I Can Read book club for children in Kindergarten through 2nd grade last year. After reading it we created our own crayon tee-shirts. Using white tee shirts sandpaper, old crayons, and an iron. It was a ton of fun and the children loved discussing the importance and value of each color, which then lead to a discussion of the importance and value of each person.

Cmp librarian, what a great idea!

I begin a position as a substitute librarian for our county this weekend, after having been in special or corporate libraries my entire career. I think it will be a lot of fun, but will always be on the lookout for new ideas!

By children's do you mean only children under 12 or do you include Young Adult?

Young Adult has its own forum, but there are many books that overlap of course.

This sounds like a cool book! It makes me sad that my kids are now too old for most picture books.

My own daughter is too old for picture books too. But now that she is studying to be an elementary school teacher, I have been re-reading some of her favorites whenever I get a few spare minutes. Rediscovering the books like "Zoom Broom" brings back terrific memories for me.

I've never read "The Day the Crayons Quit," but it sounds like a cute book. My son is an advanced reader in the fifth grade, but he has held onto some old favorites from when he was little, namely "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" and "Chicka-Chicka Boom-Boom." He still pulls them off the shelf every once in a while, and I have a feeling that we will have them for many, many years to come.

** Love** Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!!

Another book with a similarly fun title is 'Click Clack Moo'..

It tells the story of how farm animals go on strike, and what happens!

"I love you to the moon." I was 17 years old when My grandmother bought me the book with a note in it telling me how much she loved me. Only time my entire life she told me. I still have that copy to this day. It's on my daughter's shelf.

Also I LOVE LOVE LOVE "are you my mother." lol.

Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney had a huge impact on my as a child. It made me want to make the world a better place. I would strongly recommend it to any parents looking for good books for their children.

A good book to read to elementary school aged children (grades 2-4) around Valentine's Day is "Somebody Loves You Mr. Hatch". Its main message is how everyone needs to feel loved, so be involved as well as include others.

Junie B Jones series is great for kids 7-8 especially since the main character is their age.
