The Poppet and the Lune by Madeline Claire Franklin
Like everything written by Madeline Claire Franklin, The Poppet and the Lune (An Original Fairy Tale) is an amazing story that is sure to capture readers’ hearts from the first words until the final words. This particular story, as the subtitle implies, is a fairy tale woven with elements of fantasy and the paranormal/supernatural. I would probably classify it as a young adult novel, but adults (like me!) and more mature middle grade readers can easily enjoy it as well.
When all of the children in a small village are tragically killed by an unfortunate strike of lightning, the desperately grieving parents turn to the local witch for help. Unable to bring the children back to life, the witch does the only thing she can do, despite her best judgment. Using the salvagable parts of the deceased children, she stitches together a single child; however, the witch is murdered before the magic to bring her fully to life is complete. The villagers name the unfinished patchwork girl Elizabeth and share her as their daughter.
Several years pass, and Elizabeth tries her best to complete her role as the daughter of each poor family who lost a child. But the villagers are not satisfied with Elizabeth, who doesn’t live up to the standards they have set for her. Elizabeth, feeling like an outcast without her own memories or even her own name, journeys out of the village to find herself and her place in the world. During her travels through the forest, she meets a cowardly wolf who turns into a young man, Faolin, during the full moon. Elizabeth and Faolin continue together, encountering interesting characters, like Father Time and a prince who is obsessed with fairy tale characters.
I can easily picture this story presented as the next big Disney/Pixar feature film. The words read like beautiful poetry, and I feel like every single word is as important to the story as the next. A beautiful fictional land is presented and can be easily pictured, and the characters are perfectly loveable and wonderfully realistic. You know you’ve come across something good when a writer can convince you that a patchwork girl and a reversed werewolf are actually real people living in a world with tons of other fairy tale creatures.
I am admittedly one of the pickiest readers in the world. But I swear I can not think of a single thing to negatively criticize about this book. There might have been a few typos here and there, but if they don’t bother me, they don’t really exist, as far as I’m concerened. The sheer awesomeness of the rest of the book completely cancels out any errors that might have slipped into the story.
Without hesitation, I give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. A great example of what a fairy tale is supposed to look like, this book is sure to enchant readers from beginning to end. Like me, you won’t be able to put it down. I will continue to recommend this book to everyone, for as long as I live.

I still think of Sally, all sewn together, and look forward to (sometime, hopefully) meeting Elizabeth for myself.
Thank you for (finally ) reviewing this.

Soooo awesome!ALynnPowers wrote:I'm so proud of myself for finally writing it! I posted a link to it on my twitter and tagged the author, who totally saw it and re-tweeted it, so now I'm pretty much doubly happy!

It's too bad I didn't write this review sooner. Just a few weeks ago (before I did the review, of course) she had a free giveaway on her goodreads (maybe?) for a copy of this book on audiobook. Not exactly the same thing, but free is always awesome.

You're welcome! I feel like I didn't do the book justice! There was so much more that went on, and so many great parts of the story that I loved. But I felt like I couldn't write too much more in the summary without spoilers.gali wrote:Sounds good. Thank you for the lovely review.
