I always listen to music when I write. I pick music to fit the story/article, however. When I was working on my cannibal manuscript I listened to old country and classic rock. Beautiful.

Music always distracts, but when I'm concentrated on something, it doesn't bother me

It depends but sometimes I would prefer pure silence so that I can concentrate on what I’m writing. Distraction can be annoying at times.

Yes I like music while working on PC. It keeps me free from the working stresses.

I would prefer silence however there are very few places in my life that I can find it so I have learned to just tune everything out. Unless someone actually calls me by name I dont hear anything.

I listen to XM radio Octane when I write, or my Itunes. My mind starts to wander if I don't have music on.

Definitely listen to music while writing. It tunes out the rest of the world and helps me focus- but can't be distracting music. I call it "transport" music.

My list usually consists of
The Smashing Pumpkins (Ava Adore cd mostly)
Nine Inch Nails (they have a lot of instrumentals that are really surreal)

And if I'm trying to write a sad scene, John Mayer's new stuff.

Music is good for me to get my writing juices flowing. But after I feel inspired, I have to turn it off. Otherwise it is very distracting. I can tolerate music while I'm writing as long as the song doesn't have lyrics. Otherwise, I'd find myself singing along with the song.

It would probably make for interesting reading if all these posts were collated somehow. It would appear that classical music is a winner, but other forms and genres also appear. Interesting that a lot of stuff is used, but with lyrical content a no-no in most cases, is this, I wonder, because of concentration failing.
I cannot for the life of me listen to anything at all, it destroys any ambience I create for myself, although, when I relax and make a coffee, the sounds go on loudly, again, with no lyrical content at all. Even the wife can destroy the calmness by just walking around and I love her to bits, it doesn't stop me whining though...lol

I can only listen to something and do another thing at the same time that involves extra thought if I dont know the song that is being played, otherwise I always sing along or hum along and get distracted.

Scott Hughes wrote:Do you listen to music when you write? I like to listen to music when I work at my computer, but it distracts my line of thought sometimes when I'm writing. However, I don't have a problem if I listen to music without lyrics, such as classical music or instrumentals. I prefer to do that, because the silence makes me feel to restless to write. What about you? Do you play music or anything, or do you prefer to write in silence?

I like music but it distract me while I'm writing. Most writers want a quiet place. Now I'm writing a ebook for my website Tek Media. Check it out Tek-Media dot com.

Ohhh, Lover I Don't Have to Love is a great song. So is We are nowhere. I <3 them.

Anyway, it seems like a lot of you can listen to music while writing. I honestly can/can't do both.

If I'm stuck on a point (which happens often because I have shifty panties), having music on will start to piss me off. A sticky plot point, or a badly written paragraph that refuses to become well-written, and I'm ripping the stereo's plug out of the socket. Also: don't speak to me or look like you're happy where I can see you!

However. If I'm rolling (on inspiration!) and really, really into the characters, then I welcome the music~because I can ignore it.

I use music to muse, then switch it off and start to write.

I love listening to music when I write. I don't always, but often I do. Sometimes I like the mood of the music to match the mood of the story, but other times it doesn't matter. I guess it just depends on what mood I'm in at the time. I can listen to music with or without lyrics, except for soundtracks to musicals. Those are too hard to tune out.
