What is a artistic success of a writer?

Post by MoisBenarroch »

What do writers see as success? Sales? Reviews?

I have this quote in my head by a Mexican writer, his name is Mario Bellatin.
He said that artistic success is that the reader reads his work from start to end.
Whether he then likes it or not, he as a writer has succeeded.

I have been thinking a lot about this idea, it's not bad. But there are books that I have not read from start to end and I believe they have inspired me and influenced me... Some of them are even more important than those I read in one sitting and forgot two days later.

To me personally, a success is something that I feel comfortable showing to others. If I'm sharing it, then theoretically it's the best I can possibly write. It's been edited and rewritten to my satisfaction, and now I want others to take part in it by reading and sharing their opinions. Even if they don't like it that much, my satisfaction as an artist is more important than tailoring it to my readers' liking.

The artistic success of a writer is for him to have great followers who are always ready to read his books immediately after their release, get great and compelling reviews and having to create a brand from his write-ups.

I might say success is two fold: 1) the writer being happy with their work and wanting to write something new; 2) a reader who enjoys the writer's work and wanting to read their next piece.

An artistic success for me is a piece of writing that I am proud of. That's my number one criteria: do I feel very proud of this piece of writing?

For me artistic success is feeling pride in my work. It's basically writing a story as a writer that I know I would enjoy as a reader. I write stories with myself in mind and what I like to read.

I can think of a few different ways to gauge success. One would be if the writer themself feels that they've completed writing something and said what they want to say with it. Just the act of saying, "This is done," is a kind of success. The other is if it makes a reader stop and reflect on something; if they think, "yes, that's it. That's true. Somebody finally put it into words," or else something like, "huh, I hadn't thought about that before."

in mu view, both means success. to review a book you have to read it and buying a book means the buyer might have liked it. but finally what the author see as success depends on his/her personal view
We all need people who will give us feedback. That’s how we improve.
