Re: Fifty Shades of Grey

Post by Geneen Karstens »

My hairdresser said her book club looked on the best seller list and decided to read Fifty Shades of Gray without knowing much about it. When they gathered for their next meeting one of the women dressed in every shade of gray she could, with a handcuff on her wrist and a rope on her ankle. The discussed and laughed for two hours, as they had never done before. So...maybe there is some redeeming quality in it. A good laugh is good medicine!

I'm inclined to go with Bighuey's appraisal. After all, he did invent sliced bread.

I may get a copy and check it out in the bathroom. I live alone so I wont have to lock the door.

I have finished all three and I have to say I was dissapointed. I picked them up because I kept hearing how they were flying off the shelves. All the news and talks of banning them are really ridiculous, there are books in the Erotica section of bookstores that are far more shocking and in that section there are Classic Erotica reads also that Fifty Shades is peanuts comparing to them.

Bighuey, don't waste your time,I have better recommendations for the bathroom. tsk tsk

I myself picked up a copy of fifty shades of grey after seeing it on half price offer and after two chapters in I knew it was waste of money. The writing style was so bad and reminded me so much of Stephanie Meyer so I goggled the author only to find out that 'Fifty shades of grey' was actually Twilight fan fiction. The author just changed the names of the characters and a few other things.

I've read the books (three of them) Iliked them. If you want to read just a erotic books there you have everything you need but if you want to dig a little deeply you'll find strong/weak characters, where the control is everything to someone who was horribly abused ( in this case a man), even it's the story of becoming someone else, the necessity to fight with the darkness and destroy the beloved one as less as you can.
of course it's up you, you can read whatever you decide.

People are being a little harsh on this book. I thought the writing was simple and straightforward (though I haven't read that much of the book). It's basically chick-lit, (and has also been called "mommy porn"). I dunno...it didn't hold my attention, but I think it's more because I'm not the demographic for it. I'm sure there's much worse out there.

Subject matter aside, it is terrible, terrible writing. I could feel my brain cells committing suicide. I was curious from the hype, and though I know full well any book with this sort of hype is guaranteed to be bad, I gave it a go. A few pages of this inane babble was quite enough.

I haven't read it yet (my library has a huge waitlist for it), but I was told that it's really good by one person, and another said that it is sort of mundane with how there's no real plot to it. Just lots of sexual encounters. I'm still interested though. It doesn't sound like your average, cheesy romance novel, but instead something more exciting. That's why I like romantic suspenses like Suzanne Brockman's Troubleshooter series and Virginia Frazier's Iron Sights series. Used to be into Janet Evanovich's series because she used to keep it exciting with a little sex in there, but now one book sounds like the next. Keep it interesting people!

I am presently reading Fifty Shades Darker, second book in the trilogy, and I love it.... I guess it's just an opinion thing you either love it or you hate it. Yes the the writing is simple, yes it takes a while to get to the point, but it's good once you get into it, and personally I think more elaborate writing would take away from the story. It's written in first person. The girl has a simple personality, so it goes to show that the writing would be simple. All these people who say they read a few pages or the first couple chapters and thought it was bad just missed out. I completely disagree with all this "there's no point to it" nonsense. It's not just written porn or whatever, it's dark romance. A love story. A dark, twisted, "fifty shades of effed up" kind of a love story  , but a love story nonetheless. That being said though, reading this book while being hopelessly single is not the best combination  But all that's just my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions lol.

NJTraveler wrote:I concur with the above. Someone needs to tell her that a thesaurus comes free with Microsoft Word. The sex was pretty hot... but getting to the sex was tedious and repetitive. Even the sex itself became repetitive after awhile as she found the most unsexy ways to refer to certain parts and moments. Not to mention, she creates this completely trite and cliche model of a 'perfect man' that now every woman is aspiring for but no man will ever be - we get it... he's hot, he's obscenely rich, he flies a helicopter, he plays piano, enough already.
I was slightly interested in this book until I read your description. Thanks for saving me a few bucks! :)
