Its funny. I tried to read some of the first novel, and every page was a struggle. It was so contrived and cliche and all the other things I hate about some of the more recent novels. I feel similarly about Twilight. However, I am eternally jealous of both these women, who have created a fortune doing what I really want to do, and without doing it justice. I want to be them, and yet I hate their work. Its basically a jealous paradox. :D

I actually quite enjoyed it. The writing isn't the best and the character development is a bit poor, but I still found I liked it on some level. I think that it has the potential to be a powerful story but it just doesn't quite match up to expectations. The sex almost gets in the way of the plot. It was good to begin with but in the end it just felt excessive and it took opportunity for character and plot development away. There are similar series that do a better job, i.e. The Crossfire Series by Sylvia Day.

In my opinion,

Fifty Shades of Grey is about a girl who is very timid and shy but when she meets the closed off billionaire who lives a different lifestyle, she begins to unwind a bit when she enters his life. The books are about them each finding themselves and learning how to live with each other and conforming to each other to be able to live and survive within their relationship. Of course there is a lot of sex including the BDSM but I always tend too look further into story lines and I can see how their relationship develops within the series.

I feel that the book were quickly written however since it seems that there some repetitive happenings and the stories drag on a bit but I enjoyed them anyways. I enjoy mostly anything but if you don't like that aspect of a lot of sex then don't read. This isn't really your typical "romance" series. It is a bit darker. A bit on the darker end of the shades of grey spectrum.

Fifty Shades of Grey is an alluring novel filled with erotic scenes. It will open the door to another world for people who have not used many adult toys in the bedroom and even some who have. As a young woman entering this world, Anastasia Steele walks through doors which she will never be able to return. How will she cope with this new world? How far is she willing to step into the shadows for the captivating Christian Grey?

I personally found this book very intriguing. Being inside Anastasia's head during this whole ordeal was quite eye-opening. While enjoying this sexy novel, I am also pleased to step in Anastasia's shoes and explore her world. The book is very well written and it's not hard to get caught up in the world of Grey, but it is hard to get out. I found myself not able to put the book down. When I thought I would take a break at the end of a chapter, I just had to peek at the next and keep reading. While the book is very inticing and the story and characters are a treat to get to know, there is added value in the new ideas formulating in my brain for my own bedroom. :techie-studyingbrown:

When people talk about fifty shades of grey , the first thing they mention is sex, kinky, etc. But if you pull away the sex from the story and look at the plot it keeps you intrigued.

I think the story revolves around Christian and each serie makes you want to keeo reading to find out as to why he is the way he is? and what happened to make him turn out the way he did?

Fifty Shades of Grey, very contreversial indeed. The book is about college student Anastasia Steel, who will soon meets this strange mysterious, yet attractive man, Christian Grey, as a result of an interview in which anastasia herself goes in the place of her roomate Kate. This series involves a lot of sexual scenes and thays why its so contreversial, however i believe the story has such a greay story line with such great character. I mean you can take out all the sex scenes and stuff and you will still be handed a wonderful story.

It's mostly about the erotica aspect but also has some romance aspects as well. I will admit, after a while I just skimmed past all the erotic stuff so I could finish the storyline itself. It's not the greatest series in my opinion but when I start a book or series I always feel the need to finish it. Some of it is slightly outlandish when you look too deep into the rapid progression of virgin to full on submissive. She goes from absolute virgin to a world of BDSM within a few chapters which seemed a bit far fetched to me.

Just spare yourself the headache and do not read it. It has a whiny female protagonist who is super weak, undergoes next to no character growth and is just plain annoying. The male protagonist is slightly attractive, but didn't really make me fall head over heels. The writing style is terrible. The first book, somehow, I finished. The second book was unbearable.

It's supposed to be erotic fiction about a BDSM relationship. Truth be told, it's poorly written fan fiction that parallels the Twilight series. It is good for a quick easy read if you want something romantic but if you are looking for true erotic fiction about BDSM, look elsewhere.

Hi,
I have started reading this book when I was 17, the starting was quite filmy. Good looking and rich guy, perfect in every way. Who doesn't like to get lost in a dreamworld? Being a girl I loved the book as it started and tempted to read further. Their first few intimacy sessions can really take you high. But as I came on the 16th chapter of the first book I really got fed up of all the repetitive detailed description of the sex stuff and literally got a head ache. I stopped reading it. Then after 2 years in March 2016 I resumed the reading. I came up with a trick of skipping the sex part as some of you have noticed it mostly ended with "Oh Ana" (Grey's expression). The story grabbed my interest despite erotic descriptions. I liked the romance, teasing, small fights which made me smile many a time. With my little trick I enjoyed all the three volumes. It became just like any other romantic novel for me with different and unique twists and turns. No doubt the so-called pornography exceeds the limit for normal human but dear critics that's what made you read the book in the first place. If it would have been like any other romantic novels with adequate intimacy details then I doubt a normal love story could have been the best seller. She has indeed created the cliché model of "perfect man" with perfect "happy ending" but I feel once-in-a-while readers like stories with blissful perfect ending to take their mind off from the messed up life they daily go through.

It is erotica. I like the characters and the strange and intoxicating relationship between them. However, I will say that the author is very repetitive with her sex scenes and they all seem very similar. This is why I could only get halfway through the second book before becoming bored. If I'm gunna read a sexy book, dammit, I want there to be more than one kind of sex! Give me variety! Lol

I really enjoyed the first book, primarily because it was "different" than anything else I'd ever read. I didn't mind that the writing was a bit immature - it was okay, because I knew the books had been written as Twilight fan-fic, and self-published. I thought it was all pretty hot, really. The second and third books, though, got a little repetitive, and the storyline became forced.

Interestingly, these books sparked a huge storm of "knock-offs." I was amazed at how many "damaged rich guy" books popped up after FSOG became so mainstream.

While visiting my sister in Australia 2012 she was busy with the first book. In the 3 weeks i was there she finished all 3. She told me its a adult romance story. I dint bother to ask more info about the books. Got back home and a few months later it was a buzz in all the shops. I borrowed the books from a friend. At first it didn't interest me me but as i continued reading it got better. I personally do not think that people talk really the way Ana and Christian does while having sex. The whole contract thing was to much for me but i continued reading. Book to was much better as the relationship grow more intimate. Book 3 was the best but i didn't like the ending. So much questions that needs answers.

Fifty Shades of Grey is actually an reworded version of a former Twilight/ Robert Pattinson/Kristen Stewart inspired fanfiction called "Master of the Universe" written under the pen name Snowqueens Icedragon aka E.L. James. The fanfiction is still floating around the internet in pdf format. It is a poorly written erotica involving BDSM, abuse, abusive relationship and a weak plain Jane innocent virgin who attracts the attention of the unobtainable temperamental oversexed billionaire.

LiteraryAddicted wrote:Hi Everyone,

I am new to this but I have a question: what is Fifty Shades of Grey really about? I have heard so much about it and as a voracious reader I am tempted to read it. However, I want to know what I'm getting myself into. Anyone out there in the ether how has read it or is reading it that can enlighten me as to what it's about and why so much gossip?

thanks!

I have read this book more than once. Yes it does contain some sexual content of the taboo sort but ultimately it could be classified as a love story of a new college graduate who falls in love with a severely emotionally damaged by drop dead gorgeous rich man. The best advice I can provide in regards to indecision about reading the book due to the gossip surrounding it is that you ultimately need to make your opinion on the book based on your own experiences and not just go along with what others are saying.
