Re: Fifty Shades of Grey

Read all three, well read all of book 1, about two thirds of book 2 & about a third of 3
The relationship aspect is interesting, the sex interesting but just repetitive after awhile Glad I read them - not on my read again pile though....

The more I hear about these books the less I want to read them ... haven't heard or read any of what I would call reliable reviewers recommend them!

I ended up reading the first one (well reading is a mild term as I skipped through most of it). The writing was appalling the characters were one dimensional idiots and the story was lost amidst all the sex. I read a little snippet of a review and they all dubbed it 'mommy porn' - I'm not sure how accurate that is since I'm not a mother but it made me laugh.

I agree with you Teesie...I read the 1st & 2nd one rather quickly, and I couldn't put them down, currently working on #3. I am not the type of person who likes to read mindless drivel or porn all the time, but in my opinion I thought the story underneath the sex was quite good. My reading tastes are extremely varied, and while I do enjoy reading erotica sometimes, I definitely need a good story line to keep me interested. She used way too many big words unnecessarily, but I have thus far really enjoyed them. To each their own I suppose.

Ok, so this book has been the talk of the workplace the last few weeks and I have read a few pages of the most explicit part of it and all I can say is What a pile of absolute crap this book is! Its quite clear that the women who love this book, a large amount of them are horny and lonely spinsters who react to the slightest hint of bare flesh or innuendo. I hate to bring this up but very few women are watching as much internet porn as men so most men find this kind of thing a joke because they are hardened to sexual images but its less acceptable for women to view porn so they are still repressed in a way, certainly if the reaction of many of my married, 30 something workmates are anything to go by.

Storm in a teacup, this book.

I am currently on the third book. I originally purchased the series because I heard nothing but good things about it; it was the talk of the season! Fortunately, it is very much worth reading; however, I find a lot of similarities to Twilight (hope that didn't turn anyone off!). What people who are not too familiar with the story tend to think is that it is just an erotic novel. On the contrary, it has a very deep and emotional storyline that goes far beyond the physical relationship in which the main characters are involved in. With that said, I cannot wait to finish the last book and finally unravel the mystery which is Fifty Shades of Grey!

Same here Amanda, I think they're pretty good. And contrary to what others seem to mention, I am not a lonely horny spinster; quite the opposite. It's funny to me how emotional people get over something like a book. I'm not saying it's a literary masterpiece by any means, but I find the story itself pretty good fiction. Not the best books I've ever read either, but definitely something entertaining to get lost in, for sure.

I haven't read it, but it seems there's no middle ground. Reviewers either love it or hate. I ran into a female friend
of mine who had a copy with her and said she couldn't put it down. In fact, we were in our favorite pub, where she
goes everyday, either for her lunch break or to visit on her way home from work. She was reading the book and ignoring
her drink. I asked her what was the attraction. She just smiled and rolled her eyes. When I pressed her, she told me
"I can't tell you, you'll have to read the book." I've never known her to be that moved by anything. She certainly isn't
a bookworm. So I'd like to hear from the ladies who've found this book so captivating. Is this something, a ritualized
submission to what appears to me to be cruelty, that all women have considered? I've had girlfriends who were so
submissive, that it was a turnoff. They would have no problem adapting to The Rules set forth in "Fifty Shades,"
whatever they are. It seems to me, that the book has nothing to do with "Literature" or "Character Development", or
any prevalent writing constructs. It's tapping into an area in the Female Psyche that many women, under the right
circumstances, would love to indulge. What are your thoughts?

I find it funny that others skim the books too. By the third book I found myself skimming the majority of it.
Could this mean they weren't good books? :P

Does this have the potential to have a cult following? Something so transparently bad that it's amusing? Bh, I crown
you King of Cultural White Elephants. Come forth and render your thoughts. It's amazing, I haven't read a single
word of it, and I'm giving serious consideration to it's iconic aspects. Think of all the really bad ideas that have been
commercially successful--Reality TV, Monica Lewinsky, the hoola hoop, Rocky Horror Picture Show, the Gremlin,
Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean sausage, Jimmy Dean Bisquits and Gravy, American Idol, Paris Hilton, the 1971 Ford Pinto.
Huey, get back to me!!! This is bigger than Fluoride(The Communist Conspiracy) in Our Drinking Water. 246
toothpicks, I'm an excellent driver, show me the money. There's no end to it!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fifty Shades of Grey--I salute
you!. You're the Emperors Clothes and Amtrak all rolled into one.

Finished this about 4 hours ago. I've been more entertained by Gus(my ungrateful cat) when he's loaded on catnip.
He's a trip. He's convinced grapes are alive. He'll stalk one until he's sure he has the strategic advantage, then pounce
and slap it around until he loses interest. I can't make up my mind whether he's incredibly creative or needs glasses.
Fifty Shades of Grey is so contrived and the characters so unlikable, that by the midpoint of the book I was hoping
she'd choke to death on her own psychobabble and take him with her.

It is the worst written book I have ever come across. Try reading Cassandra Parkins blog, or her recently published book, lighter shades of grey. there she disects what is wrong with fifty shades in a very amusing way.
Try reading the one star reviews on Amazon they are hilarious and a lot better written than the book. How thios ever reached the dizzy heights it has is beyond me.

Out of the masses of people that brought the first one, how many thought it good enough to buy the rest???

Being the author of a recently published romantic eBook (to keep the price down to one third of its cost, if purchased otherwise from a 'bricks and mortar' bookshop), I undertook the 'task' of reading each and every one of the 42 Posts re. 50 Shades of Grey in the Genaral Books and Reading Discussions section, simply to salve my curiosity, regarding a book that has reputedly sold over one million copies, yet which hardly any OLBC readers like and non think it well written. I have to say, the 'task' turned out to be the best entertainment I've had for many a long day. While the concensus of opinion appears to be that the writing is truly bad, the actual Posts themselves, were, almost without exception, brilliantly written, I thought. Many of the comments were hilarious and had me reeling with laughter. I am a fairly new Member of OLBC and therefore delighted to now find myself among a community of seasoned and perceptive readers. May I suggest, as an antidote to the 50 Shades trilogy that for those who really enjoy tales of true-love, written more in the spirit of Jane Austen, but with somewhat more up-to-date language and perhaps a swifter moving plot, that they try the 'Romance' Category in, say, Lulu's bookstore website and check out their 'Staff Picks'. Lulu has, in effect, done reader's initial browsing for them, by reducing the 22,500 titles available in this Category to a handful, expertly rating and selecting the very latest and best books/eBooks on offer. A great place to start and a real time saver.

I've read the book and it's really interesting and it's not all about sex like the media portrays it to be. It's basically to summarize it about this billionaire who takes an interest in a young lady and they develop this relationship. I don't want to reveal to much about the first book but I plan on reading the whole trilogy.

I've read all 3. They were ok, the writing isn't good. Some bits of the story i found ok, the sex again some was ok. The story was very much rinse and repeat. I wont be reading again but im not angry I read them or anything and I did want to see how the story ended. Think i skimmed the last book, but i did like the end and how it all wrapped up in a nice bow :)
