Re: Fifty Shades of Grey
Just a question: What is better? The twilight series or Fifty shades of gray? I read the first book of Twilight series and didn't like it at all. So what is better out of those two books?

I am new to this but I have a question: what is Fifty Shades of Grey really about? I have heard so much about it and as a voracious reader I am tempted to read it. However, I want to know what I'm getting myself into. Anyone out there in the ether how has read it or is reading it that can enlighten me as to what it's about and why so much gossip?
thanks!

I reckon Ms James will replace Dan Brown as the most common book on the shelves of 2nd hand bookshops in a couple of months .... and I mean common in every sense of the word

dindindin wrote:I haven't read it, but it seems there's no middle ground. Reviewers either love it or hate. I ran into a female friend
of mine who had a copy with her and said she couldn't put it down. In fact, we were in our favorite pub, where she
goes everyday, either for her lunch break or to visit on her way home from work. She was reading the book and ignoring
her drink. I asked her what was the attraction. She just smiled and rolled her eyes. When I pressed her, she told me
"I can't tell you, you'll have to read the book." I've never known her to be that moved by anything. She certainly isn't
a bookworm. So I'd like to hear from the ladies who've found this book so captivating. Is this something, a ritualized
submission to what appears to me to be cruelty, that all women have considered? I've had girlfriends who were so
submissive, that it was a turnoff. They would have no problem adapting to The Rules set forth in "Fifty Shades,"
whatever they are. It seems to me, that the book has nothing to do with "Literature" or "Character Development", or
any prevalent writing constructs. It's tapping into an area in the Female Psyche that many women, under the right
circumstances, would love to indulge. What are your thoughts?
Okay, so The Fifty Shades trilogy isn't the top - notch, world ranked professor examined, most accurate or "technical" as a lot of you here would like. It's a book. That doesn't mean it has to have a lot of big words, or use a lot of technical punctuation, or have to have characters with layers like onions. It's the author's style and that's it. Some people hated Twilight, some loved it. Same with this book and really with any book. Aren't books created for our indulgence and to escape in a sense (unless otherwise deemed)? Why does that make these books bad just because the characters are to skin level for so many of you out there? So what if it simply narrated, it sure as hell captivates a lot of people. And power to those women blushing over it in joy, obviously it suits their escape. I don't expect them to shoot down Stephen King like that just because some of his books are a bit drab and don't have the sort of content they prefer.
It's a flippin' book... Made for the enjoyment of others and whatever else the author was feeling. ta da

I agree with most of your post but what annoys me is that with so many well written, engrossing books out there that the only book so many people seem able to mention is really just porn, but such is the world we live in. However, I am of the opinion that it is better to read something than not read at all so maybe 50 Shades will encourage some readers to develope the reading habit & maybe their next book choice will be Dostoyevsky
I said a while back that E. L. James would soon have more books in secondhand bargainbins than Dan Brown & last Wednesday I was in a bookshop browsing & overheard a lady make exactly the same point to her partner after she almost tripped over a crate of the dam book parked in the middle of the shop ... maybe she read my post & was actually quoting ME!
