Re: Fifty Shades of Grey

I never read it, but I heard it's very sexual, so I'm not really interested to read it.

Just a question: What is better? The twilight series or Fifty shades of gray? I read the first book of Twilight series and didn't like it at all. So what is better out of those two books?

I have read books before that I just could not put down. This wasn’t my case with Fifty Shades of Grey in particular. People are saying so though, and when I stopped to watch the TV the women were saying too they could not put it down, that’s why it sparked my curiosity on top of needing something to read. Well, so Fifty Shades Of Grey is not one of them, but I still would recommend it (for open minded people, of course, as the sexual reference might not be for everyone’s taste). Some readers say the book is “unputdownable”. However, I would not push it that far.

I am new to this but I have a question: what is Fifty Shades of Grey really about? I have heard so much about it and as a voracious reader I am tempted to read it. However, I want to know what I'm getting myself into. Anyone out there in the ether how has read it or is reading it that can enlighten me as to what it's about and why so much gossip?

thanks!

I read all three of them. Thought the writing was horrendous. I skipped through all the sex scenes because they all sounded like housewife cheap erotic fanfiction. I did like the story though, millionaire or actually billionaire meets shy smart girl who had just graduated from uni and have a rapid tormentous but fairytale like romance. I didn't like her character at all but I did love his. I was able to shut down the fact that it started as Twilight fanfiction and that's how I was able to read them and actually enjoy all the characters in the book.

Way too much information folks
I reckon Ms James will replace Dan Brown as the most common book on the shelves of 2nd hand bookshops in a couple of months .... and I mean common in every sense of the word

This novel might be fine for sex, but isn't it romance, we are all really, really seeking? When you go on to a publisher's/bookseller's website, do you search in the 'Sex and relationships' Category or the 'Romance Category?

OMG...this is a must-see. Laughed until I cried. Literally.

Gilbert Gottfried reading (aloud) part of 50 Shades of Gray in...well...that VOICE...

Best use of this book. Ever. Google it on you tube.

dindindin wrote:I haven't read it, but it seems there's no middle ground. Reviewers either love it or hate. I ran into a female friend
of mine who had a copy with her and said she couldn't put it down. In fact, we were in our favorite pub, where she
goes everyday, either for her lunch break or to visit on her way home from work. She was reading the book and ignoring
her drink. I asked her what was the attraction. She just smiled and rolled her eyes. When I pressed her, she told me
"I can't tell you, you'll have to read the book." I've never known her to be that moved by anything. She certainly isn't
a bookworm. So I'd like to hear from the ladies who've found this book so captivating. Is this something, a ritualized
submission to what appears to me to be cruelty, that all women have considered? I've had girlfriends who were so
submissive, that it was a turnoff. They would have no problem adapting to The Rules set forth in "Fifty Shades,"
whatever they are. It seems to me, that the book has nothing to do with "Literature" or "Character Development", or
any prevalent writing constructs. It's tapping into an area in the Female Psyche that many women, under the right
circumstances, would love to indulge. What are your thoughts?

Okay, so The Fifty Shades trilogy isn't the top - notch, world ranked professor examined, most accurate or "technical" as a lot of you here would like. It's a book. That doesn't mean it has to have a lot of big words, or use a lot of technical punctuation, or have to have characters with layers like onions. It's the author's style and that's it. Some people hated Twilight, some loved it. Same with this book and really with any book. Aren't books created for our indulgence and to escape in a sense (unless otherwise deemed)? Why does that make these books bad just because the characters are to skin level for so many of you out there? So what if it simply narrated, it sure as hell captivates a lot of people. And power to those women blushing over it in joy, obviously it suits their escape. I don't expect them to shoot down Stephen King like that just because some of his books are a bit drab and don't have the sort of content they prefer.

It's a flippin' book... Made for the enjoyment of others and whatever else the author was feeling. ta da

@Fascist
I agree with most of your post but what annoys me is that with so many well written, engrossing books out there that the only book so many people seem able to mention is really just porn, but such is the world we live in. :? However, I am of the opinion that it is better to read something than not read at all so maybe 50 Shades will encourage some readers to develope the reading habit & maybe their next book choice will be Dostoyevsky :)
I said a while back that E. L. James would soon have more books in secondhand bargainbins than Dan Brown & last Wednesday I was in a bookshop browsing & overheard a lady make exactly the same point to her partner after she almost tripped over a crate of the dam book parked in the middle of the shop ... maybe she read my post & was actually quoting ME!
