Easy for me: Raymond Chandler, mixed-and-matched with Dashiell Hammett.

Hands down, my favorite author is Ayn Rand. I love her descriptive writing, eloquent plots, fascinating philosophy, and personal insight into Communism.

I also love Agatha Christie. "And Then There Were None" was the first of her books that I read and after that I was hooked. Her ability to formulate these intricate plots is fantastic and she can almost instantly suck you into the book.

Baroness Orczy is another. I read "The Scarlet Pimpernel" and was sucked into the love story, of which I am generally not a fan.

John Kennedy Toole.

Such a shame how the publishing industry did not recognize his talent in his time, and we lost him to frustration and disillusionment. What other books could he have given us?

George R.R. Martin!
Ever since last year when I stumbled across the preview for Game of Thrones on Hulu while looking for something to watch, I have been hooked on the characters of the seven kingdoms. While I haven't read any of his other books besides the Song of Ice and Fire series, I can still say that he is one of the best writers I have ever read at creating characters (dozens of them) and maintaining all of their individual personalities flawlessly throughout thousands of pages. There is a reason he is hailed as the American Tolkien.
But honestly, if I have to give true credit to where my writing style and overall influences come from, my favorite writer has to be named as Stephen King. He is, and will forever be, the master. I hope one day I can meet him, and show him one of my books.

I find Jodi Picoult to be very insightful. I love the way she explores her stories from different perspectives, makes you wander through your moral compass and challenges misconceptions and stereotypes. I love reading her work, I'd argue that it's made me a more empathetic person.

I cannot select just one - there are several that spring to mind: Pat Conroy, Mary McGarry Morris, Margaret Laurence, Alice Munro, Timothy Findley, Wallace Stegner, Richard Wagamese to mention but a few. They all have writing styles that encourage the reader to expand his or her mind by entering a full fledged journey created with 'words'.

John Grisham - he's great. For law students, I would recommend his books. :)

It is hard to pick just one! Most long-time favorite is Robert Ludlum; but right now I'm hooked on Ted Bell, Brad Thor and David Baldacci. I recently stumbled upon a series of fantasy books by Michael W. Lowe that I have really enjoyed too. So many books....so little time!
