read Running With Scissors by Augusten Burroughs or anything at all that David Sedaris has written. Since you're a fan of horror, Chuck Palanhiuk may be a good option for you, but his books tend to be much shorter than most of King's recent ones. In any case, Haunted scared the crap out of me. King also just released Doctor Sleep in October, I believe, and it's the sequel to The Shining.

I just got done reading Cassandra Clare's "The Mortal Instruments" series and absolutely love her work. She puts in magnificent detail into the story and offers a variety of different people, from LGBT to different ethnicities. She is my absolute favorite and highly recommend to anyone.

Mark Helprin's A Soldier of the Great War. As big and sweeping as the story is I definitely lolomg'd a couple of times. Ha ha Let me know if you ever read it, I like to hear other people's opinion on books of that caliber

I mostly read Christian Fiction. It sounds like you are looking for suspense, and there is a series called the Love Inspired series that offers a lot of suspense novels. They are a lot of fun and can keep you on your toes. They are pretty much just pocket books that you can by at Wal-mart. I go to thrift stores though and get them for 25 cents instead. I don't think this is what you are looking for, but it's the best I can do. All of the other recommendations I have are for Romance books.

Try Lucy Ellmann - I suppose you could say she writes intelligent/satirical 'chic lit'. Genuinely funny and slightly misanthropic.

I'd recommend 'Dot in the Universe' and 'Varying Degrees of Hopelessness'.

Some very good suggestions here. I heartily recommend anything by Margaret Atwood. 'Alias Grace' is a good one to add to your reading list after you've finished those suggested by the posters above, and the MaddAddam trilogy (starting with 'Oryx & Crake'). You say you like John Irving, have you read all of his books? He is one of my favourite authors but I'm still working through his oeuvre! I just finished 'A Widow for One Year', honestly one of my favourites. Try Kate Atkinson as well, especially if you enjoy Atwood.

I like reading Young Adult dystopians, like The Selection by Kierra Cass and Matched by Ally Condie. I also love Twilight. I definitely reccomend it, although people think I'm crazy. Trust me, the movie does it no justice.

Murder as a Fine Art and the sequel, Inspector of the Dead by David Morrell are two books I would recommend. I am getting acquainted with his work in preparation for meeting him soon at a local author event. Morrell is the creator of the Rambo series.
