Yeah, Carrie is a good place to start, it being his first (published) novel and its a reasonable length as well
.

You learn something everyday, I did not know that Carrie was his first published novel. Hey SKM is the old movie "Firestarter" with Dennis Quaid based on King's novel.(I figured if anyone knows it would be you :) ) I have seen that movie but have not read the book.

Yep, bang on the money, Gannon, the 1984 movie is based on the novel by King. The novel is quite a gripping tale about government corruption and the fight between the paranormal and science. Not one of his longest novels but i would definitely recommend it and i believe the movie (which was average in my opinion) featured a young Drew Barrymore, what a career. :D

I thought it was, thanks for confirming that. I cannot remember much of the movie, but it sounds like you like the novel so I might have to give it a read. Drew Barrymore seems to have been acting since the moment she was born. It would be interesting to know just how many movies she has actually been in. I wonder was Firestarter made before "ET"?

Movies And Writing

Post Number:#94  Postby Maud Fitch » 10 Apr 2011, 19:49

I started to look at her filmography on IMDb and gave up scrolling! ET was 1982 and Firestarter 1984.

This book may have been mentioned previously but it was recommended to me and I always recommend it to upcoming writers - Stephen King's "On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft" published 2000. It's a great insight into penmanship and the man himself. Even that horrific accident.....

"Gave up scrolling", holy mollies how many movies has she been in. So ET was before Firestarter, thanks for that Maud. :)

Drew Barrymore has lived a thousand lives before she hit 30- divorce, drug addiction, travelled the world and starred in countless films!

I would echo what Maud said above about 'On Writing' it really is a startlingly honest insight behind the great man himself and a good point of reference when it comes to the big debate over King's books pre and post-accident. They have certainly changed but for both better and worse in my opinion.

Thats right, I forgot about his accident. The accident happened after he had written "Misery" didn't it. I wonder if that book was going through his head just after he had his accident. :)

Gannon~
SK wrote a piece for the New Yorker after his rehab from the auto accident. He was very bitter and it was a side of him I hadn't really expected. As far as I read, it was truly an accident....I don't think alcohol was involved, and of course SK was on foot.

I have SK's On Writing Maud, it's a great book.

His wife Tabitha is also an author.

Glad you brought that up about Tabitha, MB. I've been told that his sons Joe Hill and Owen King also write. And that Stephen King uses aka Richard Bachman and John Swithen. I have not read their work but would be interested to hear from anyone who has and what they thought of them.

Hey MB thanks for the info, I did not know anything about the accident, I had actually forgotten all about it.
Maud, you have to get your hands on a copy of "The Bachman Books". It is a collection of four novellas. One of them, "The Long Walk" is a cracking good read. I have both of Joe Hill's novels and liked them very much. I think his style is very similar to his fathers. They have that real King feeling about them. I know that Tabitha writes as well but have never read any of her work.

Oh Yes Gannon, it's a great read, I read it eons ago and still I think about it. Isn't that odd? I read "Water for Elephants" and yet I forgot about it until I saw the movie trailer....lol!

Thank you, Gannon, will seek them out and add them on TBR list.

^ Yes, the Bachman books are fantastic my personal fave being The Running Man, a scarily realistic look into the future where technology controls everyone!

@ Gannon, his accident was in 1999 and many think he has changed his style dramatically since then, myself included but i dont think this is necessarily a bad thing, his recent work Duma Key is up there with the best books he has ever written..

Woh "The Dark Half", theres an oldie but a goldie. I loved it. Have not read it in a long long time but I just grabbed it off the shelf to remind myself what it was about and I feel like reading it again. Imho very very good. I would be very interested to see what SKM thinks about this book.
