I'd like to recommend you start reading his short stories before getting dry facts.
Try Sonny's Blues, for example. You'll have questions while reading and you can start searching for answers.
That would be an organic approach. It will go a long way towards continuing your interest.

(just checked the date of your post...Anyway, I hope you had some fun even it was for an assignment 8-) )
