Dr. Seuss books started it for me because it had me reading as a small child. I've been reading ever since.

Eric Carle wrote the caterpillar book. I think that was a favorite for many young children.

This is a bit of an odd combination, but the authors that really got me into reading are Ann M. Martin, Roald Dahl, R.L. Stine, and Christopher Pike.

After reading The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, I miss it and want to read more like this one. There are not many authors who write about Nature and Human in this way.

I picked up a book by Keri Arthur and was so intrigued that now I have all of her books. I always have reading material wherever I am because I can't get enough.

I love all of these answers, there are so many fantastic authors that get into our heads over the years. The best writers painting pictures in our minds of images and scenes we feel like we can touch, smell, and walk into.
I read the "Heaven" series by V.C. Andrews in high school and was captivated, then "The Bachman Books" and everything else I could in the late 80's and early 90's by Stephen King. Then college and children came. I did though, like most all of us loved books as children, teach my children that books are treasures.

Mine was Francine Pascal with the "Fearless" series. It's a long but great series!

I think it was Encyclopedia Brown. I couldn't get enough of those books. Funnily enough, I'm not one for mysteries nowadays.

I think it might have been Dr. Seuss...my mom used to put me in bed and pile his books all around me. It's how she kept me out of trouble - I wouldn't leave the pile for hours. :)

Those were my first and some of my favourite books as well! Also the Up the Faraway Tree series and the series with "the Secret Island" in it, also by Enid Blyton.

I believe most of our generation who didn't start with Harry Potter got with it with Stephanie Meyer. And then Suzanne Collins

Erle Stanley Gardner and Perry Mason started it all for me when I was very young. I always looked forward to the courtroom scenes. Now, my favorite authors include John Grisham, Scott Turow, and Richard North Patterson, lawyers all.

I have to remember back to 1952 or so but it was either Edgar Rice Burroughs or Osa Johnson. I can recall reading all of Burrough's novels--Tarzan and Carter--and Osa Johnson's books from Africa.

I would have to say Ann M. Martin. I was 7 years old when I started to read my first chapter books, Baby-Sitters Little Sister. I eventually branched off to the Baby Sitters Club. From there, I learned to love reading.
