good choice!!! this was the advice given to me: after you finish the second book take a break to read "the stand" because the third book and on introduces one of the characters and some of the plot from that book. Plus it is a fantastic book and I'm glad i listened and read it before continuing with the series. Have fun!!NotEvenClose wrote:
Thanks for all of your input everyone!
I think I'm going to start with The Dark Tower series as it's been the most suggested one to begin with.
Since this site and the people here are so awesome, I now have a full list of stories to read!
(Yes I am still reluctant to start a King novel!)

I have read many, many Stephen King books. One of my favorite books by King is "IT". I also really enjoyed the Dark Tower series. There are very few of his that I didn't enjoy. Patterson is not one of the authors I like.

The Dark Tower series is great, but maybe a little much for a first time with the King. I would suggest Misery or possibly 11/22/63 both are less on the "scary" side and are great novels.
To James Patterson's credit I will say I just finished Zoo and found it to be a great novel, but in no way can he hold a candle to the King.
Good luck on your adventure through the pages

You really do need to give Mr. Mercedes a read. I just finished it a month or so ago and found it to be an excellent read.Chanensassy22 wrote: I've got so many books going on right now but I am itching to read Mr Mercedes.

I would definitely recommend you read the Stand by Stephen King. You would really enjoy it.

If James Patterson makes any more romantic novels, I would like to be the first at the library to read them.

I myself much prefer James Patterson and I love crime/thriller/mystery novels but Stephen King can give me nightmares. I guess what the saleswoman was trying to say is they both have scary aspects to them and therefore she was drawing the conclusion they're in the same genre, but I would disagree. Apart from that, Stephen King's books are also more supernatural, whereas James Patterson's aren't.
I think if you like James Patterson you're far more likely to like Michael Connelly. You should give him a try if you haven't already-- they're quite similar and Connelly isn't scary!
