I don't know if it matters. I was readin Slaughter-house Five and had no idea what was going on until about a third of the way through it and then it was like a light went off in my head and I got it.

That's a good question because I want to start reading his books too. I was wondering the same thing. Let us know what you find out.

theres a lot of recurring characters but it doesnt rly matter what order you read them in, i would read Slaughterhouse Five, Cats Cradle, or God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater first

I just finished Slaughterhouse 5 and can't wait to read the next book. I loved it! You gotta feel for Billy.

Start with Cat's Cradle, because it's his best work... Then again, you may be disappointed with his other work, at least by comparision.

I started with Cat's Cradle and couldn't really get into it. But Slaughterhouse-Five was probably my favorite. Think it took me a day and a half to finish as opposed to like two weeks with Cat's Cradle

Yes. I would start with Slaughterhouse Five. The Essence of Vonnegut

There is some minimal crossover of characters in most of his books. However, there is nothing requiring you to read them in a particular order. They all stand on their own. I have read all of his books. My favorite was "Breakfast of Champions." The movie bore almost no resemblance to the book except for the character names. I also read "Venus on the Half-Shell which was Phillip Jose Farmer's tribute to the character Kilgore Trout. It was also very good. At the time, I thought Vonnegut wrote it. Kurt was not amused apparently.

Kurt Vonnegut had a reputation as a science fiction writer because of "Slaughterhouse Five"; he was not pleased with the title because science fiction occupied a low status in the world of literature. I don't believe that is true these days, sci-fi has become much more respectable.
