If the author can draw me into his&her books it is mostly what draws me to them. If they draw me to their time (like a 500 years ago) then it is perfect too.

The theme of the books they write. For example, if they write about Italian family life and love, I will definitely take note of the authors name and look for other books by her/him.

Initially it is genre based. Then it is the authors style that keeps me. Or doesn't keep me as the case may be.

The plot really. In my opinion anyone who can dream up or think up a very interesting plot that keeps me wanting for more is a very good author.

Vivid, imaginative descriptions with enough space between the lines to allow for ones own wheels to turn. A good writer can make an epic or a short story out of a colony of mold. It's all about structure and flow. And in the end it's about entertainment!

I like recommending authors with quirky, unique writing styles. I also find myself clinging to high fantasy authors.

At first I was gonna post along the lines of, "I don't think I have an eye for authors to have certain criteria to judge them with. At least, not yet." Then again, I started thinking about some of the books or authors (even though I'd never read one book by them) that really moved me. It became a lot easier to come up with my answer:

I usually go for authors who have the guts to be different. It's all about self-expression baby 8) Well, to me, reading has a lot to do with escapism. Probably that's why I'm willing to be open to "unorthodox" authors. Sometimes, I just try a certain book by a certain writer just because s/he's considered unique, but in a good way.

If I really like one of their books, I will come back for more they have written.

What draws me to an author initially varies tremendously. What primarily keeps me is an author who makes me think things I've never thought before.

Genre initially. I am partial to mystery and suspense books. But then follow the author mostly.

I love an author whose first sentence captures me and never let's me go. I like to relate to their story and really live the book through the eyes of the characters.

Re: What draws you to an author?

Plot and vivid characters. Also, the way the author transitions through his/her scenes or chapters. I always like a good antagonist in a book, as well. If I can get hooked in the first couple of paragraphs then I know I'm in a good book!

the style of writing would be my major "turn-on" for a writer, if it's easy to read but still colorful i will read every book written by the author.

Intelligence and passion draw me to an author. I can read any book, and genre, but truly well-written books are always gems in my opinion.

With me it is storytelling. Pat Conroy could write about a chess game, and I would probably find it fascinating. M. L. Stedman is another such writer. The way she turns a phrase and her insight into the characters really grabs me. Even if the plot does not move like a jackrabbit, with these authors I just don't care. I am enjoying the artful telling of the tail.
