I usually go for authors who have the guts to be different. It's all about self-expression baby Well, to me, reading has a lot to do with escapism. Probably that's why I'm willing to be open to "unorthodox" authors. Sometimes, I just try a certain book by a certain writer just because s/he's considered unique, but in a good way.

Plot and vivid characters. Also, the way the author transitions through his/her scenes or chapters. I always like a good antagonist in a book, as well. If I can get hooked in the first couple of paragraphs then I know I'm in a good book!
