Margaret Peterson Haddix is my favorite. I read a lot of children's fiction just to keep up with my kids and the kids I teach. Haddix's books are fun to read.

An author my kids like is Paulette Dantzer, who has written two books. Her second book "We Love You Mrs. McCorkle" came out in the past week. This one is great for children starting at age 8 or 9 or anyone who is or knows a teacher.

Shel Silverstein's books made me wildly happy as a kid. Well, his books still make me happy.

When I read the forum subject my mind automatically spit out Dr. Seuss! Then, I started reading some of the other author's being named and thought maybe I should list something else or just not post anything, but I read this post and it reaffirmed my original thought. Dr Seuss is awesome! I still read his books to my kids at bedtime and I love the rhyming, sometimes tongue tying, stories.

Thanks joepwow for reminding me to just be myself :D

Thank you for all the great suggestions. I have a 7 year old daughter who is getting into reading chapter books. With Christmas around the corner, these lists of authors is perfect. Can't wait to see what I can find.

My grandma got me a signed copy of his book "When The Cows Come Home" when I was a little girl, and then growing up in Missouri with writing and English I've met him a few more occasions throughout my life. He's always been so friendly, happy to talk, and a great joy to be around! At over 80 books published, he's doing something right! :)
Great choice with such a variety of books. I'm going to see what my local library has that I can borrow for my youngest two children (ages 5 and 8 ).

I love children's books. There are so many good authors. It's hard to choose. I really enjoy - J. K. Rowling; E. B. White; Shel Silverstein; and Kate DiCamillo.

A newer author that I recently discovered and fell in love with is Chris Grabenstein. He wrote the book "Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library. Which I used a book club book for a small group of 6 middle-school girls at my local library. For the meeting I was able to go to the author's website and the author agreed to do a Skype call with the girls, for free! He has also co-authored several children's books with James Patterson, but "Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library" is my favorite and a must read book.
