Lemony Snicket, J. R. R. Tolkien, and J. K. Rowling would have to be my top picks. I enjoyed C. S. Lewis as a child, but now that I've grown up and largely given up religion, rereading his Narnia books feels a bit odd. Lloyd Alexander also writes excellent books, and ones that you can come back to as an adult.

L. Frank Baum is my all-time favorite. I read everyone of his Oz books to my son when he was young. I do not, however, consider The Wizard of Oz, book 1, to be the best in the series. You really have to keep reading beyond book 1 to get a full understanding of the world of Oz, it's more than just the Emerald City.

On a more contemporary note, my son and I have also really enjoyed reading Rick Riordan, John Grisham's young lawyer series and the Hunger Games series.

J.K Rowling, R.L Stine, Roald Dahl and E.B White in general.
Enid Blyton in particular. I loved all of her books and her Malory Towers series made me want to go to boarding school. ( I did go to one but found no midnight feasts or jolly prank playing)

Either Roald Dahl or Eva Ibbotson. I read her books over and over again so many times.

Roald Dahl and J.K Rowling are just two of my favourites. I love The Twits :)

I like David L. Harrison http://www.davidlharrison.com/. My grandma got me a signed copy of his book "When The Cows Come Home" when I was a little girl, and then growing up in Missouri with writing and English I've met him a few more occasions throughout my life. He's always been so friendly, happy to talk, and a great joy to be around! At over 80 books published, he's doing something right! :)

Roald Dahl's name comes to mind first. I thought he was brilliant. My children all loved Dr. Seuss when they were little, too, not to mention some of the old favourites like Rudyard Kipling and C.S. Lewis. One of my daughters absolutely adored Diana Wynne Jones.

Roald Dahal!!! I loved his books! Well, I still do. It's so imaginative, and the illustrations add so much to the stories.

Shel Silverstein is by far my favorite author. I loved her book of the short story/poems when I was little. I still have the book, too. Her stories were just so interesting and always captured my attention. They still do sometimes :)

I grew up with Roald Dahl. Rick Riordan writes children's books. So I guess he qualifies...
