Good authors for 10 year olds

Post by CJE1979 »

My son loves the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books by Jeff Kinney and Big Nate books by Lincoln Peirce. What other good authors are out there for a 10-11 year old? Thanks!

Tolkien might be a little tough going but the story is worth it
Magic Tree House is excellent, level probably about the same as Wimpy Kid
It is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay. J.R.R. Tolkien

Hullo there, CJE1979, have you logged on to your local library catalogue? Many have dedicated kids catalogues and the top ten guaranteed favourites. I'm not sure where you live but I can recommend some good international authors:

Dav Pilkey - "Dragon's Tales" or "Captain Underpants" series
Elizabeth Singer Hunt - "Jack Stalwart" series
Anthony Horowitz - "Alex Rider" series
Emily Rodda - "Rowan of Rin" or "Deltora Quest" series
Andy Griffith - "Schooling Around" or "Just" series
H I Larry - "Zac Powers" series, Mega Mission, Test Drive, etc.
Eoin Colfer - "Artemis Fowl" series
Jeff Brown and Scott Nash - "Flat Stanley" series.

Barbara Park. All of the June E. B. Jones books are great. I used to love them when I was younger.

Oh also I don't know where you are from but the IDOE has published lists of recommended reading for students, which is nice because they include fiction and non-fiction, poetry, biography, etc.

My son liked Rick Riordan's Kane series (anything by him, actually), and a variety of authors who use small images and/or maps to go with the story. I can't recall the authors.

Librarians can help find any of those books; they're a helpful lot.

I can recommend all the books by Garth Nix- particularly the Mister Monday series.
My brother loved them and flew through them all.

I would highly recommend all of David Walliams' books. "Mr Stink", "The Boy in a Dress" and "Billionaire Boy" are all really funny and touching. The humour's perfect for children but they all have an important message in them as well. I've not got through one without crying at the end.

If he's in to football, how about "Alfie Jones" by David Fuller?

This really depends on the kids reading level, but I'm a huge advocate of anything by Tamora Pierce.
