Charity Nominations

Post by Scott »

If I release a novella on Kindle (vote for free for me to do that), my plan is to donate $1 per copy sold on release day to charity. I asked for some nominations from friends.

They gave me some good ideas. I might use them, but none of the charities suggested had a 4 out of 4 star rating on CharityNavigator.org.

Does anyone want to nominate a charity with a 4/4 rating on Charity Navigator? Please do nominate your favorite 4/4 charity.

If I can get a few nominations for 4/4 star charities, I will put up a vote to decide between just those.

Otherwise, I will stick with the charities I already have on my list (with nominators first name and Charity Navigator rating):
  • Shriners Children's Hospitals - Lauren - (3/4)
    Defenders - Arun - (3/4)
    St. Jude's Children's Hospital - Kathy - (3/4)
Reach Out and Read - Kate - (3/4)
Big Brother Big Sisters - Jenny - (2/4)
Chrysalis Center - Ally - (listed but unrated)
Mamma Baby Haiti - Melody - (couldn't find)
Altrusa International - Diane - (unrated)
***
In order to make sure this whole thing happens and with the maximum donation amount, please make sure you have voted for me.

Any animal rescue foundation would be great. I also second Mariemc's nomination for the Wounded Warriors project.

This may be common sense to some, but I would suggest looking up the salary of the charity's CEO before deciding.. Some of them are REALLY ridiculous!

Shriners Children's Hospital, Wounded Warriors, or any Cancer Treatment Center.

Cystic Fibrosis Foundation looks like it's 4/4

I personally have lived with this my whole life. It's horrible and I loose friends to it every year. Every penny goes to research for finding a cure. Not trying to persuade you. Just saying it's a worthy cause. :)

This is my vote as well! I have a friend who used to work at the research center in Memphis, and it was amazing there.

Great point! I think that the percentage spent on salaries is part of the Charity Navigator score right?

-- 28 Apr 2016 10:21 am --

It looks like these are all the nominations, with the charity navigator rating and the highest salary I saw listed on Charity Navigator.

Wounded Warriors (3/4 -- on Watchlist) - 473k
Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (4/4) - 650k + 323k from affiliates
Shriners Children's Hospitals (3/4) - 487k (Chief of Staff)
Cancer Treatment Center (couldn't find)
The Humane Society of the United States (3/4) - 372k
Habitat for Humanity International (2/4) - 310k
Hartford Area Habitat for Humanity (4/4) - Not compensated + 50k from affiliates
Salvation Army (unrated)
Defenders of Animal Rights - (3/4) - 103k
St. Jude's Children's Hospital - (3/4) 1.3 million
Reach Out and Read - (3/4) - 82k current (+ 250k to former execs??)
Big Brother Big Sisters - (2/4) - 423k to former president
Chrysalis Center (listed but unrated)
Mamma Baby Haiti - (couldn't find)
Altrusa International - (unrated)

To narrow down, I am eliminating the ones that are unrated, watchlisted, paying a single executive more than a million dollars, or less than 3/4 on Charity Navigator which leaves:

Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (4/4) - 650k + 323k from affiliates
Shriners Children's Hospitals (3/4) - 487k (Chief of Staff)
The Humane Society of the United States (3/4) - 372k
Hartford Area Habitat for Humanity (4/4) - Not compensated + 50k from affiliates
Defenders of Animal Rights - (3/4) - 103k
Reach Out and Read - (3/4) - 82k current (+ 250k to former execs)

So I suppose this is what we will use. However, I cannot deny researching all the charities has been very disheartening. I definitely want to take on the project of looking through more charities to try to make a small list of ones that would be good for two reasons: (1) to share for other who in the future need such a list, (2) to create another hopefully larger charity program through OBC which doesn't require members to donate but will have us make significant verifiable donations on the members' behalf.
