I read (or tried to read) all of the rules.
I understand why having a book from the middle of a series would be a problem but is there a reason, other than preference, that the first book couldn't be allowed?
I ask because I have many series I love, and I love to find new series, and this seems like it would be an effective way to go about it.

Yes, there is a reason. A book from a series, be it the first one or the third, doesn't stand by itself and usually leaves loose ends. The preference is therefore for books that stand by themselves and don't require one to continue to the next one. I love series as well, but don't think that a BOTM is the place for them.
